“Beautiful trail”
Review of Herring Cove Trail

Herring Cove Trail
Reviewed 4 August 2011

This is a nice distance (~2 miles each way), with some fairly steep climbing in the first 1/2 of the trail on your way to Beaver lake, but well worth it. When we did the train in July '11 the trail was in amazing shape and looked like it had just been completed. The trail hikes a long a series of waterfalls before flattening out and going through a lush forest. The forest finally opens up to a meadow with a large waterfall in the distance and then a short climb to Beaver lake. This trail could be combined with the Beaver lake trail if you had a shuttle to pick you up at one end or the other.

To get to the trail head head out to the end of Sawmill Creek Rd, past Fortress of the Bear and Heart lake trail head until the road turns to gravel. Trail head has a small parking lot and well marked signs.

We recently hiked the Herring Cove trail, and it is spectacular! He have hiked all over the world and this is a favorite! It is not too long, 1.3 miles one way, but can be combined with other trails to go any length you desire. It is a new trail built in 2010, and is so well done.

Quite steep, through lush rain forest. The lake at the top is somewhat redundant as the journey is the best, not the destination.
There is some beautiful construction to get you over creeks and through a bog, well done by the Forest service.
Anyone travelling to Sitka that enjoys a hike, this is a must do.

Take sawmill road past the Fortress of the Bears to Herring Cove. Trail head is well marked.
