This is an amazing refuge run by dedicated people who obviously love the bears. Do not miss this when in Sitka! A wonderful bonus was the many eagles who gather above at feeding time. The naturalist as well as the founder provided excellent information. All of the bears were orphaned, and would have been killed if the Fortress had not saved them. By the way, it is also an absolutely beautiful drive out here, just a few miles from downtown. If you get to the unpaved road, as we did, you have gone too far.

I read about the “Fortress” online and was excited to see it. My family, however, was not quite as motivated because we had just heard too many scary bear stories, the day before, on an ATV excursion.
We boarded the Fortress school bus shuttle, which left from Centennial Center in Sitka, and fifteen minutes later we arrived. The place does not look like much from the outside but all judgments go away as soon as you see those bears. Wow!
The people who operate the Fortress truly love these bears and it shows in everything that they do. Even the eagles and ravens benefit from the operation.
There is a charge for the shuttle, which they include in the ticket price. It is well worth it!

[Be aware of your time and schedule because the shuttle driver is not on a set schedule. We thought that we had our departure time worked out with him and that was not the case. Fortunately, I was watching the parking lot, saw him leaving, and we stopped him. We would have been late for our next activity]

We did a tour and this was a stop on it. Very entertaining and worth the visit. It was a good way to observe bears in a safe environment. There were several eagles in the trees and flying around to view. A must stop if you are in the area.

These beautiful creatures came to be fed like big dogs while we were there, that was really neat! The bear guide was very friendly and knowledgeable wish our kids had been with us to see them!
