When in Sitka you must check out St Michael's Cathedral, it is a truly beautiful building and cultural experience that you simply will not get short of visiting Russia. Combined with the Bishop's House National Park you will walk away with a better appreciation of Alaska's colonial experience. I saw others discouraged by the small donation of $5, but please go as the donation helps preserve this treasure for the next generation.

We did not get a chance to go inside, but this was the first stop of places to see in Sitka for me. Had seen pictures and wanted to see it for myself. Pretty little church right in the middle of town. While taking pictures a local stopped to talk to us. He told us to watch for the eagles that like to perch on the top of the spire. As if on cue, we heard an eagle cry, turned to look up, and sure enough one had just landed at the top of the spire for us to photograph! Visited in July 2012 NOT 2013.

Upon entering the Cathedral you have a feeling you stepped back in time. Sitka, on Baranof Island, was initially settled by the Russians and was the capital of Russian America. One can imagine what is was like in the day when viewing the splendor of the decor and the artifacts contained in the Cathedral. Well worth the visit.

This little cathedral sits right in the middle of town on a little island with traffic on both sides. The inside was just gorgeous with all the old icons, treasures and artifacts. Our narrator was very passionate about the history of this cathedral. Very interesting that 95% of the original artifacts were saved during a fire that destroyed the building.

Many Icons most over 100 years church is not what we consider a cathedral today but very old (rebuilt to original design in 1966 due to fire) still active and currently has long time resident member who is more than willing to provide history a must see
