We ate dinner twice at the Raven (likely better known as the Westmark hotel) restaurant. First of all, Sitka is weak in dinner choices with plenty of places featuring burgers and deep fat fried fish. We all must also recognize that there is major seasonal factor in the dining demand with the need for a huge increase in waitstaff in summer. The Raven has a fine dining menu with local fish. The first night was a 5 star experience, and I could not understand the tone of other reviews. The waitress, Andra, was very experienced, explaining the menu and specials to us and bringing well prepared cocktails. We ordered a bottle of white wine and she brought frozen glasses for the wine. Each course was brought with perfect timing. The salad, chowder, oysters and fish entrees were well prepared and well presented. I do agree that the chowder is a little less than world famous. The next night Andra was not working and our service became a nightmare. We did not seem to have one specific person assigned to us. No chilled glasses, orders in error and salad, appetizer and main coming out at the same time. The evening was tipped off with an error on the bill. This time I give it 2 stars. The food was still well prepared, even though it was amateur hour in the waitstaff. I average those to a 3, since there is an obvious management problem. I still recommend the Raven, since Ludvig's, everybody's favorite requires at least a day advanced reservation. The food is good, just be prepared for a possible fiasco in service. Note to management: give your temporary staff some training, they are eager to learn.
