Description: In business since 1900, the City Cafe experience is like stepping back in time to the days of the hometown diner--the place where you knew everyone and they knew you. Good food, great service and friendly people combined with good value for your money left you with a smile on your face. Breakfast was always hot and fresh and included all your favorites--like eggs, grits, bacon, country ham, or omelets filled with anything you could want. Homemade desserts, real ice cream milkshakes, and hand-patted burgers were just some of the treats that awaited, and that plate lunch with Fried Chicken, Homemade Meatloaf, and side dishes that reminded you of Sunday Dinner at Grandma's house. If you miss that kind of place, or if you've never experienced it, you don't have to have a time machine to go back and do so. Just get in whatever mode of transportation you have and then . . . Come see us!

I'd heard good things, went with my daughter. Duct tape on the booth seats and a roach did not get us off to the best start. Food was okay, I'd go to Good Gracious right around the corner. It doesn't have the history, but the food and atmosphere is way better.

I wrote after a visit in 2009, when lunch was very good; but today we dined again and found things not so good as before. Chicken livers and roast beef were lunch choices today. Both were okay, but almost overpowered by the brown gravy. Veggies were just ok. Cabbage long overcooked. Broccoli with cheese sauce that tasted suspiciously like canned nacho cheese sauce. Corn bread crusts weren't crisp. Green beans were ok. Disappointing chocolate pie, with sticky meringue. Still a place with friendly service and a good local experience, but the details need attention. Maybe we caught them on a bad day.

This was stop #1 on my gastronomic tour of original Nashville restaurants with my beloved friend Sherry. We were hungry and had just enjoyed a lovely drive which showcased beautiful old Victorian homes and downtown Murfreesboro. Quite by chance we ended up at City Cafe. The restaurant itself was warm and inviting with many lovely photos of Murfreesboro as it grew over the years, a warm, homey and casual atmosphere that was very inviting. There were many fine choices on the menu but we both decided on the "Judge's Breakfast". Our order arrived quickly and we about fell off our chairs when the breakfast arrived on 2 different plates per person with the pancake the size of the plate, the country ham on another plate spilling over the edges of the plate, 2 perfectly cooked eggs and a fine bowl of grits. The waitress said after the breakfast we would be ready to plow the lower 40. The meal was excellent, everything was delicious and an incredible bargain price for a superior quality and quantity of food. The waitress was not wrong, when we left I was so energized by that amazing country breakfast I did not even need a mule, I was ready to hook myself up to the plow and go for it. This is a delightful eatery!

Service and food were both very good. Our waitress did some good-natured picking on one of my breakfast meal partners. Local politicians and lawyers were also using the restaurant. Southern charm and food at its best.

Start with the bench in front, filled with local guys watching the world pass by. Inside, a traditional "meat plus three" menu with a wide range of specials at rock bottom prices. This place has been in business for a hundred years for good reason. Fried Chicken and the BBQ Pork (oven style) with kraut were our lunch choices. Fine cornbread with great crust on the bottom and the edges. A real place. Not high on the popularity list, but for a downtown lunch where locals like to eat, this fits the bill.
