Beautiful country to travel through. We stayed in Flagstaff & wanted to visit Sedona but highway 89 was closed due to the recent fire. Took 17 detour only a few miles longer to Sedona & enjoyed the travel through the pines.

Coconino National Forest has hundreds of trails. One we found was 20 miles north of downtown Flagstaff on Route 180 going towards Grand Canyon on the west side of the road. There is a large parking area and restrooms. The trail is an easy mile and a half flat trail--the first part is paved with macadam (making it handicapped accessible) while most is a dirt trail. There are information panels along the way about the animals, plants and history. A nice easy walk to see a variety of wildlife, especially birds(Stellars Jay, hairy woodpecker, western bluebird, etc.) and surrounded by beautful mountains.

I was at the 2014 Overland Expo at Mormon Lake and was riding an adventure bike. We rode a lot of trails and went to the south rim. We also explored the San Francisco peaks. The sights were amazing and I am in awe of the Grand Canyon no matter how many times you visit. The only slight was at Mormon Lake and the shower facilities. Of the 3 showers available only one was working near the end of the weekend. But thats what sanitary wipes are for!

Anytime I pass through Flagstaff on a business trip, I make a point of setting aside time for at least a brief hike in the Coconino National Forest. The trails, towering pine trees (Jefferies, I think, fill the air with the aroma of vanilla) and dramatically sculpted hills never fail to inspire, no matter the time of year!

I look forward to a week-long camping trip soon...

We visited so many areas of the forest. We wanted to make sure and experience as much of the desert and mountain attractions as we could. Very beautiful and breathtaking area.
