This place seems so charming, great location downtown, but big disappoint when we got to our "suite". It's old and kind of falling apart. I like the idea of the historic hotel, but it needs major updates for the price. I wouldn't stay here again, way better to stay just out of town at a nice hotel.

First off, we had been warned against staying here by family members, but we're suckers for historic hotels so figured, why not! Check in went smoothly, but upon arriving at our room the door was still open with a rag..we wondered if the housekeeper had forgotten to close the door or if maintenance was correcting an issue, odd. We stayed in the Jack Daniels Suite, 2 separate rooms with the bathroom in between. It was after dark when we arrived so in turning on the lights we discovered 3 burn out light bulbs, one over the sink and two in one of the ceiling fans, no biggie, but it took us asking THREE different staff members to obtain new bulbs! Upon looking at previous reviews we saw that another trip advisor member had stayed in the same room and made the same observation. Now if it had been summer time with it being light later we may have overlooked this, but with the dark curtains and October, you need the lights. Needless to say, being on the backside of the hotel it was relatively quiet and the beds were comfy. However next time in Flagstaff, we will stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor room, away from the bar.

Monte vista has a great location. Unique setting. Bar, restaurant and pool lounge on premise. Oh, did I mention love bands? Yeah. Parking was a bit difficult to find and ended up at the garage across the street.

It's not a cookie cutter hotel. It's quirky and a bit creaky, but quite comfortable. The bar and lounge were jumping on a Saturday night, but the room was quiet. It was kind of an experience rather than just a place to sleep. The staff were great and served a great cup of coffee in the morning.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights (Thursday and Friday nights), after a week of camping up in Utah. We requested a top floor room, which we received - room 407. It had an overall comfortable feeling to it, and we were glad to be up on the top floor. (Even on the top floor, we heard the yells/talking on the street below) The room was filled with vintage furniture, and painting a dark green, with a dark brown shag rug. So overall it was a fairly dark room, even during the day, which some may like and some may not. The bed and pillows were comfortable.

The bathroom was tiny. In fact, the sink was awkwardly located in the bedroom area, not in the bathroom. The shower was about 3' x 3', so it wouldn't be adequate for an over-sized person. And, although it looked clean, it still had an air of mildew about it... probably because there's no ventilation system or window in there. But, none of that was a game-stopper. It was still an inviting and relaxing stay.

This hotel has it's pros and it's cons... it all depends on what you're priorities are.

Pros:
- Centrally located in downtown Flagstaff, wonderful area to walk around the shops, boutiques and eateries
- Vintage look and feel - quaint, early 1900's
- Clean
- Great bar.. they serve beer and liquor in the afternoons/evenings, and breakfast food/drink in the mornings

Cons:
- Windows are just as old as the hotel, which means they are very thin, allowing weather and noise to easily leak through
- Rooms are very small
- Some features are a little run down or outdated

In general, I like the room and the hotel. I would stay there again (provided I was on the top floor) and I would recommend it to friends looking to stay downtown. I think that with a few minor changes in this particular room, I would have given the hotel 4 stars, instead of 3. If the manager is reading this.. here are some suggestions for the room:

1) Put up a small towel bar by the sink for a hand towel to dry wet hands/face.
2) Add a shelf or two inside the shower so that the guest's don't have to awkwardly bend over for shampoo, trying not to touch the walls or shower curtain with their backside.
3) Although the three lamps in the room have pretty brown shades, it makes for a dark room, even with all three on. And, the overhead is too centralized for the small dark room.
4) The light fixture over the sink is vintage, but the modern light bulb doesn't fit. It's too long, and detracts from the quaint vintage look. Perhaps just a new glass cover that hides the bulb.
5) Replace or get a cover for the baseboard heater, so that it isn't just ugly exposed heater coils, rust, and dust.
6) Matching window treatments. It's not eclectic to have two different sets of window treatments. It just looks cheap and uncaring.
7) The bed frame is too loose, and with fairly small movements, it slams the header bed frame into the wall. So, it wakes up the guest when they move during the night. Again, the vintage look is awesome.. but, it shouldn't take the place of quality of the stay.

Room Tip: Request the top floor to reduce street noise.
