“Perfect Hike. Just remember flashlights and jackets.”

This hike is moderate in difficulty but fun for all ages and group types. The drive to the Lava Tube is beautiful in itself, but exploring the Lava tube and the unique rock formations is truly the best part. I highly flashlights/headlamps and jackets for every person in your group. It can be very dark and cool In some parts of the cave. The hike will take about 2 hours for the average family.

Went here today and there were quiet of few people and children. The little children <5 really didn't get it. The presenter was very good despite have a number of screaming, crying children. (Parents think of other people).

Positives were of course the subject matter. There were a lot of different sessions on this night which made it great value.

We had a great time despite making a wrong turn and having to backtrack a bit on our way out. As long as you keep your eyes out for the two places where the tube forks and note which way to return, though, you'll be fine. It's really hard to get lost or to be lost for long. We started out wearing jackets, but we were down to our t-shirts by the time we left from heating up from walking. There is definitely no need to dress too warmly, but bringing water is a good idea, and maybe a snack. Gloves were helpful for the first part as the rocks are a bit more jagged, and headlamps are preferable to flashlights so you can use both hands climbing over the rocks in some sections. After the first 100' or so it gets more level, but the floor is never really a flat walking surface. It was cool to turn off our headlamps for a few minutes to experience total darkness and silence. We highly recommend it and agree that it was one of the highlights of our trip.

remember to bring your lights, one of few places where you can hike through a lava tube, my daughter and her girl scout friends loved it when she was growing up... nostalgic trip for me

We were visiting the musem down the road and when my wife asked the guy at the front desk what we should see in the area he suggested the Lava River Cave. We had one flash light so we ran back to a convenience store and purchased a 2nd. We already had warm clothing so we bundled up and climbed down into the cave. Pretty cool! TAKE A FLASHLIGHT. Bundle up warm. I was glad I had on hiking boots. If you're not steady on your feet be real careful. And lastly, don't drop your camera - it may shatter and fall down in the crevices (my wife had just said "zip the camera pocket"!
