After such dramatic scenery travelling from Arches National Park and through Monument Valley this seemed pretty tame! It is interesting in terms of seeing the lava flows etc

This is a nice half-day trip from Flagstaff. Very interesting to see the old lava flows and the surrounding cinder cones. The remaining native buildings and ruins are also very well presented and interesting to see. You can easily make this loop through the park driving and stop at the locations you want to see. Great trip to fit between breakfast and lunch. Two visitor centers with water and bathrooms plus maps and information.

Sunset Crater Volcano is an awesome park with some very nice trails to experience the volcano, cinder cones and lava flows. You could easily spend half a day discovering this area and the other half visiting Wupatki pueblo ruins.

Sunset Crater National Monument is a very short drive from Flagstaff and well worth the short side trip from the highway. Once you leave Rte 89 and drive into the monument, there is a very informative Visitor's Center, which is a good starting point. we recommend continuing on the National Monument drive up to Wupatki National Monument, which has several stops to view incredible old Indian ruins. You then exit back to Rte 89. The entire drive with stops can be done in 1/2 day (or less) and is well worth it.

Sunset Crater shows the awesome power of a volcanic eruption. 900 years after it erupted, the cinder cone (a mountain of volcanic cinder) left by the eruption remains, along with eerie "fields" of dried lava - immense piles of hardened ash and black pumice.

A small visitor's center introduces you to the site. While you can see the cinder cone and lava flows by car, there are three walking trails to take. One is a short 1/4 mile loop through a dense lava flow. Another is a 1 mile loop at the base of the cinder cone. The third is a grueling 300 foot climb up a small cinder cone made more difficult by the elevation and slippery ash comprising the trail. This trail gives you a view of a massive ash flow.

If you do all three trails and the visitors' center, it takes about 2 hours. I'd skip the trail with the steep climb to save time or energy. The admission cost is just $5 per person, and covers admission to the worthwhile Wutpaki ruins up the road.
