Great one day trip through a river of lava and amazing hikes around the crater and into ancient Indian ruins. Wupatki is a MUST! Drive the entire loop.

“An Awesome Moonscape”
Reviewed 23 November 2013

This Volcano "blew" in 1064 AD. The ash made the valley very fertile. The Sinagua people moved here and built many pueblos and farmed the area. In just one hundred years, they were all gone - and nobody really knows why. The landscape here is fascinating - like walking on the moon. Excellent visitors center & museum staffed by friendly & knowledgeable docents and rangers.

“Somewhat of a disappointment”
Reviewed 14 November 2013

We were expecting to see a crater, and didn't. The park staff was not at all helpful, and rather surly. You drive for ages and see some lava fields, a few nice vistas, some ancient pueblos, but no craters.... Don't waste your time here, it takes awhile, and while, the above mentioned were inferesting, maybe not worth the long drive out there

“Interesting but......”

After such dramatic scenery travelling from Arches National Park and through Monument Valley this seemed pretty tame! It is interesting in terms of seeing the lava flows etc

“Unique history and geography”
Reviewed 9 November 2013

This is a nice half-day trip from Flagstaff. Very interesting to see the old lava flows and the surrounding cinder cones. The remaining native buildings and ruins are also very well presented and interesting to see. You can easily make this loop through the park driving and stop at the locations you want to see. Great trip to fit between breakfast and lunch. Two visitor centers with water and bathrooms plus maps and information.
