Owner description: Located north of Flagstaff, this crater was created by a volcanic eruption 900 years ago.

While we enjoyed the volcano, you can't really get close enough to it and we couldn't see any crater. The lava flow was interesting to look at. We took a short motorcycle ride (32 miles) around to the other side of the trail to the Wukoki ruins which was fabulous! You are able to walk into the actual ruins. There were at least two other ruins sites and a monument which we will have to go back and visit. On the volcano side, the visitor's center folks were very nice and friendly. We got overheated in the August desert heat and the rude/hateful ladies on the Watpaki side of the park refused to break a 20 so we could purchase a bottle of water. The cost for the park is $5 per person.

What an amazing landscape and beautiful vistas. How did the culture live thru this eruption? Visit the peak for an extraordinary view of the plains, mountains and crater.

It erupted 500 years before Columbus and looks like it was only a few decades ago. Simple and pleasant 1 mile walk. Skip the museum. Really nothing to see.

If you or your children have not seen a volcano or the area around it, it is worth the stop. Continue around to Wupatki also if you have not seen a pueblo.

When in Flagstaff, this is a must. You can hike through ancient lava fields or stroll around the extensive paths. Bring your camera and don't forget to have plenty of water with you during the hot summer months.

Nice hike on a paved walkway and also optional hike on a non-paved trail with great views of the crater and surrounding areas.
