“a great little hike - in lava!”
Reviewed 22 August 2014

Perfect science field trip to get the kids out of the hotel and running around. Plus now we can say we walked through lava fields! Also beautiful, bring the camera. Worth the short drive north from Flagstaff.

“See the Hardened Lava”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

The trails and lookouts are well-marked and very interesting. Kids will enjoy doing and learning from Jr. Ranger activities. Fun to see the hardened lava as it flowed from the volcano. Pretty wild flowers and views. The road flows into Wupatki National Monument and both parks are a good, easy detour on the way to the Grand Canyon.

“Nice stop.”
Reviewed 18 August 2014

If you've never seen hardened lava before, here is where you can get up close and personal. Very interesting if you like that sort of stuff. You can't get to the actual crater, but you can see enough of the territory to visualize what happened 1000 years ago. If you go, make sure you continue on to Wupatki or the stop might not be worthwhile. Plan on a few hours to make the loop out and back.

“Nice day trip”
Reviewed 17 August 2014 via mobile

Interesting geography and a great day trip if staying in Flagstaff. Bring an umbrella as brief showers may blow in.
