So impressed by this restaurant!

Incredible (and affordable) food, friendly waitstaff, and a cozy environment.

We sat right beside the fireplace and had the three course prix-fixe menu with wine pairing. Very romantic and civilized after a day spent hiking in the Grand Canton!

Thank Erica S

Our Family has a soft spot for Josephine’s Modern American Bistro (JMAB). We held an after-wedding dinner there some years ago. The staff accommodated to our need to get into the rooms to decorate the night before the dinner. The special menu they created for our wedding guests was wonderful.

JMAB is located on HWY 180 in Flagstaff. This makes it convenient to places north on this highway; the Museum of Northern Arizona is only a few blocks away; the Arizona Snow bowl is about 8 miles north; the Planes of Fame Air Museum, located at the Valle airport, is about 49 miles and Grand Canyon National Park is about 71 miles north of JMAB.

JMAB is in the old John Milton Clark house that is on the National Register of Historic Places (see photo). As you arrive on the street you might see the upper parking lot crowded but there is a lot in back (see photo) that usually has spaces available.

The interior dining areas are typical for a house of its age. There are tables near windows (see 2 photos) as well as tables located outside.

JMAB has a brunch-lunch menu available from 10am to 2pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 9am – 2pm on Sundays. Dinner is available M-Sat from 5-9pm.

On a recent Friday, Wife and I arrived at noon for lunch. Anthony was our server. Wife asked him about gluten free bread and he responded in the negative but the chef could accommodate her with adjustments to menu if needed. She avoided this by ordering the Calamari (she loves calamari) dusted with corn meal and served with sweet chili and spicy remoulade (see photo). I ordered Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict: 2 potato pancakes, smoked salmon, topped with poached eggs and ranch potatoes on the side (see photo).

Our food was wonderful. The only exception was that the ranch potatoes on my salmon plate (left in photo) were hard; my fork could barely puncture them. I suspect that the potatoes were kept warm in an oven from 10am to noon and they got dehydrated. I used my index finger and opposing thumb to get the delicious potatoes into my mouth.

Locals know about JMAB. Visitors to Flagstaff would do well to include JMAB on their list of places to eat.

Just north of Downtown, cozy & non pretentious. Had a reservation and was promptly seated. Waiter friendly & humorous without being over the top. Started with the baklava Baked Brie, interesting and tasty twist of Brie with typical outer Baklava phyllo covering with honey & pistachios. Caesar salad fine not extraordinary but nice to be able to add White Anchovies. Main courses the Pork Osso Buco Milanese, meat cooked fall of the bone perfectly as well as the polenta. Sesame Crusted Scottish Salmon a nice variant on just a piece of fish. The desert a bourbon pecan was tasty but totally overwhelmed by two scoops of ice cream. Nice wine list with several excellent choices in the $35 to $42 range, also by the glass for pairing. All and all a nice dining experience in Northern Arizona.

We were on the way to the Grand Canyon and went to Josephine's for dinner with some friends. The food is awesome and they update the cocktail menu fairly often. I had Macaroni and cheese with very large shrimp in it. Others had the special of Salmon stuffed crab and also the crab cakes. All of it is excellent.

My wife and I were hoping for a good meal after returning from several days exploring the areas of Arizona where fry bread and spam were considered staples.

We arrived at Josephine's after a long drive back from Gallup, NM - tired and hungry.

The menu is interesting: lamb meatloaf, pork osso bucco, crab cakes, calamari, and more.

We both choose the chicken saltimbocca. Several of the menu items were crafted in this mode - conventional recipes where the protein is not the expected one. We are thoroughly please with the quality of the preparation and the presentation. The chicken was serve with properly cooked vegetables and risotto. While the chicken was slightly over cooked, that is a flaw easily overlooked, give how hard it is to keep chicken breasts moist and tender, particularly at the very end of the night.

I can confidently recommend the restaurant.

Thank kledeen
