“One visit wasn't enough.”

Don't pass this up if you want an entertaining hike or climb. Average exertion to do this hike. Climb is also average to easy. The features of this spot are unusual in that the volcanic formations seem otherworldly. Holes in orange brown lava flow hills and walls. Unlike other Flagstaff volcanic features. Unlike Hawaii.
When you park off route 180 and walk to the right turn in the trail, you see the amphitheater, bowl, that is Red mountain. And if you can't follow the trail markers, it's not hard to keep the bowl in site. It's uphill to reach it and downhill back. It was worth every minute I spent there to experience this wonder. And I'd love to go back. The few tall pines. The strange rock formations. There are 2 formations to climb in the bowl center. Guessing one is 80 high and the other 120. Rounded shaped flows. Smooth yet gritty textured. Similar to hard sandstone. Holes basketball size and larger. My visit was during a late April afternoon '09 and the holes, caves? in the back wall contained ice. If you search the net there's a picture of the sign along Rte. 180. The other natural feature in this area that I missed was Lava River Cave.
