“Nice surprise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 September 2009

Flagstaff seems to be filled with marginal and substandard hotels. We expected the same with this hotel. Not so here! This property was a pleasant surprise and very much in line with the quality we have come to expect at a HI Express. Previous reviewers mentioned problems with train noise but we experienced none of this. Our room # 429 faced the front parking lot and enjoyed peaceful nights throughout our weekend stay. The breakfast bar was fresh, plentiful and well-stocked by attentive staff. Hotel location was perfect for our needs just slightly outside the main attraction of downtown area. A Denny's is adjacent to the parking lot and an Outback Steakhouse is within walking distance. Overall we were very pleased and will definitely stay here again.

This is an older Holiday Inn but was clean and in a great location. For the most part you know what to expect. We were only there one night on our way through Flagstaff. The rooms were older and showing their age, but very clean and just fine for our purpose. We were fortunate enough to get a room on the south side of the hotel (away from the train tracks) so we had a noise-free night. The service was excellent and the continental breakfast was adequate. The hotel is right off I-40 and there are a couple of restaurants within a couple of blocks (besides Denny's) -- Cracker Barrel and Outback. We were in Flagstaff on a Sunday and most of the downtown restuarants were closed so finding the two above were great. The complimentary WiFi worked well, too.

I question whether Wemberly was at this hotel as I don't recall seeing a McD's but a Denny's in the parking lot and as for the view if you like highways, railroad tracks and industry, i guess you'd say it was awesome. However, we had no complaints with this hotel. It was all that you should expect from this chain. Express hotels are intentionally located along highways so you can be there and be gone without a large time factor. No one should stay at a HIE for a gourmet breakfast try a B&B if that's what you want. Decent heated food like the pre-made eggs, bacon, gravy and biscuits, fresh fruit, cereal, muffins, yogurt for a quick on your way. There were multiple groups here (church mission, youth hockey, basketball) on the Sat we were here. The breakfast area was crowded but they had the Grand Canyon meeting room open for overflow. The pool was indoor/outdoor separated by clear plastic flaps and the hot tub was most definitely indoors. We had read the reviews and requested a room on the side toward the highway and away from the train tracks and that is what we were given. We faintly heard the traffic and the trains, but not enough to interfere with our sleep. We arrived in the dark and didn't have any difficulty but we were using a GPS. Rt. 66 went into town here. There was a Target and Sam's club within 2 miles or so and the downtown was a bit farther. The room was clean, and nice and all I expected it to be. This is average to above average for this chain if you are familiar with HIE. I recommend it.

We stayed for one night in June whilst motoring from Vegas to San Francisco.

This holiday inn express had a welcome pack in the room, places nearby to eat, really clean and comfortable rooms and incrediblly friendly staff. We would certainly stay there again and probably for longer to see the many sights you can see in the area.

They also provide an adequate buffet breakfast which is continually stocked up

For a HI Express, this location and room was just okay. The three front desk staff seemed a little overwhelmed by the busy-ness of travelers check-ins and requests. They appeared irritated with guests. The room was small and had a king bed with sofa sleeper. No bedding was provided for the sofa sleeper so we had to request it - and it took some time to receive. The sofa sleeper was next to the window and air unit and when unfolded made it nearly impossible to adjust windows, the air unit, or to use the desk situated literally at the foot of the bed. The bathroom was small but clean. There was no fan. Breakfast had standard hot and cold HI Express fare. The eggs were in omelet form however. And had cheese, diced peppers, and ham. Fine for those of us in our party who eat meat, but not for the vegetarians. We have preferred the HI's where the eggs are scrambled and then folks can get meat on the side (usually sausage, sometimes bacon). The hotel elevators were crazy slow, but that could have been b/c it was so busy with travelers. Due to a thunderstorm, both the pool and hottub were closed b/c of the potential for lightning as both are outside. There were two computers in the lobby, not exactly a "business center", and one computer was out-of-order. The location was okay but incredibly confusing for getting around to restaurants. Nothing is exactly next to the hotel except a mcdonalds, gas station, and motels. A bunch of roadways cross one another and negotiating the way in the dark when you're tired made it a hassle to leave the hotel for a late dinner. On the positive side, the view was amazing. If in flagstaff again i would consider giving this HI Express another chance but would also see what else is available in the price range with similar amenities.

For the money, this hotel was pretty good. The rooms were good, the beds were comfy, and unlike some people, the trains didn't bother us at all. My son was in the pool just about every day. The buffet was good, there was enough selection that noone in our family started the day hungry. Another person suggested it, but by all means, sign up for the Select membership. It's free, and you get extras like free water bottles, snacks in your room and even Dove chocolate! It's a very good family place.
