“Salt, salt, and more salt”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2014

Danny's is clearly the local's hangout bar and grill. We had a couple of hours before our early evening flight out of Buffalo and the hotel desk clerk recommended Danny's for lunch. She said she ate there often. She must be getting a kickback. On her recommendation, our party of five had a late lunch there. It's about the closest restaurant to the Buffalo airport. When you enter, you see a traditional dark neighborhood bar that's been around for more than a few decades. Locals in the bar. Restaurant in the back. A flat screen broadcasts a new live New York Lottery drawing every three minutes. You probably are familiar with this kind of place.

There are two salad bars--a small one in the bar area and a bigger one in the restaurant. Each has two soup kettles making a total of four soups available. The restaurant menu's pretty big. Two of us elected to try a western New York delicacy: beef on weck. You see these sandwiches advertised all over the Buffalo area. Here's what Wikipedia says about this sandwich: "A beef on weck is a sandwich found primarily in Western New York. It is made with roast beef on a kummelweck roll. The meat on the sandwich is traditionally served rare, thin cut, with the top bun getting a dip au jus. Accompaniments include horseradish, a dill pickle spear, and french fries." At Danny's there's no au jus and the meat is done well. It was also dry and tasteless although tender. Even horseradish didn't help pep this meat up. The kemmelweck rolls had a week's ration of salt on them. So did the baked potatoes that came with other orders so no eating the skin.

The salad bar is basically iceberg lettuce with a few other veggies like cucumbers and broccoli. Serviceable but low on variety. Nothing fancy like jicama or hard-boiled eggs. The cherry tomatoes were very good. The big salad bar feature is the soups and there's the "famous" Buffalo chicken soup always available. This is Buffalo, after all. This soup attempts to recreate hot Buffalo chicken wings in a soup form. Well, it's hot. I'll give you that. The chicken chunks that day were dry and stringy (in a soup?). There are bits of celery, potato (?), and a thick cheesy broth. Fortunately the cup supplied with the soup was small. At first, I was disappointed in the small size but given the soup, it was a blessing.

Another of our party ordered a beef and mushroom dish over rice. It came out with some sort of dark brown gooey sauce. She finished about half of it.

My wife ordered a hamburger. She said it was very good. However, the french fries were not.

If you go, just keep in mind that this is a bar and grill. Order accordingly.

“What a surpise”

This place is a family restaurant and a bit dumpy inside, but the Taste of Buffalo, a meat sandwich on a special roll, was fantastic and I will be dreaming about it for weeks. The service is also excellent!

“Good food - Great Chicken Wing soup”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2014

Went there with out daughters travel softball team - 25 in the group - called ahead for seating - food was good, service was good, MUST - try the chicken wing soup.
The waitress had a small problem with doing separate checks, but there were 11 checks for 25 people, so I don't blame her and she took care of any problems with a smile - will be back next time I'm in the area

Had not been to Danny's for many years and not sure we will go back. Tried the "famous" chicken wing soup and after two spoonfuls of cheese w chunks of potatoes (not sure why potatoes in chicken wing soup), I passed on the soup. Was looking forward to the cod special (baked w garlic parmesan sauce and sun dried tomatoes) but the fish was incredibly bland with no sauce to be found.
