Owner description: Commissioned by Nevada silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs in 1899, architect Stanford White modeled Rosecliff after the Grand Trianon, the garden retreat of French kings at Versailles. After the house was completed in 1902, at a reported cost of $2.5 million, Mrs. Oelrichs hosted fabulous entertainments here, including a fairy tale dinner and a party featuring famed magician Harry Houdini.

“Lovely Mansion”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

Like all of the other mansions in Newport, this is a beauty. The views are spectacular. The home is extraordinarily beautiful. I wouldn't miss this one while in Newport. It is a self guided tour with a headset that will take you through each room. You get the history of the families that lived there and the people who designed the home and the landscape. Very nice tour.

“A house built for parties”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

This was a summer 'cottage' and the budget for a summer season of parties back in the Gilded Age was the equivalent of £7 million now. All these houses in Newport are delightful.

“Rose Cliff Flower Show”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

A veteran of winter indoor flower shows, Newport pulled out all stops with its garden party. Gorgeous displays on the grounds as well as inside, delicious food from the cooking demos, jazz combo on the lawn, quality vendors. Op to photo lst floor of Rosecliff, normally not allowed during regular tour.

“Great stories but not the best house on the block”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

If you have limited time in Newport, skip this one. It is not an example of the great architecture that Breakers and Marble House display. The interior is a bit dull and dated. The staircase is an interesting detail and has many film stories.... Lots of stories about great parties.

The grounds are nice and the views are wonderful. The story about the "great white fleet" being constructed of plywood because the Admiral would not anchor the fleet for a party backdrop is great.

The Tea House is a nice touch, but it is not enough to make this THE stop on the tour.

“Built for entertaining and still hosts events”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

The outside of this elegant center for entertainment is just as lovely as the interior! Built with the money from the western silver mines, its owner planned it for grand balls, dinners and parties and it still succeeds when hosting private events. When I visited, the upstairs rooms featured mannequins draped with appropriate costumes from the past. Very fun and I'd like to see more of this done throughout the properties.
