“Good Stay at the Bay Club!”
Reviewed 18 April 2008

I stayed in a 2 bed, 2 bath (with jacuzzi) bi-level townhouse on the top floor last week. It was a little dated and worn down, and needed some overall updating, but it was clean and comfortable. The deck runs the whole length of the townhouse, which is really nice and our view was great. And you really can't beat the location at all- it's perfect! The people at the front desk were very nice, and even allowed us to park 2 cars in their lot since the hotel wasn't full, even though you're only given 1 spot per room.

I do agree with the other reviews that the walls are thin, and during peak season that could definitely be a problem, especially with the Rhino Bar right downstairs, so definitely go knowing that it may be noisy.

Overall it was a nice stay for a great price, and I would stay here again.

Just got back from our 3rd stay in as many years. Our first stay was fine, nice views from the townhouse suites. Upon check-in last year for our second stay in a suite, we were told that on one morning we needed to be out of our room at 8am for mandatory maintenance on the heating system, so "please be prepared." This was the beginning of April, the weather was consistently cool and rainy for the 4 days we were there. We don't have kids, so getting up and out by 8am is unheard of for us, as it is VACATION! This did not sit well with us at all, especially since we would periodically return to our room only to find the door not only unlocked, but wide open and nobody ever inside fixing anything! Not only that, but there was no heat the entire time we were there. I can appreciate that this is a beautiful old building, however that means not a lot (if any) insulation. We were cold and unhappy. I feel like 'maintenence' on an entire building is not something that happens out of the blue, and we would have gladly post-poned our trip had we recieved a phone call. We did complain, they offered us a bottle of wine, which we turned down because we got a free one with our package, and had just come from the vineyard and had a case in the trunk. The next day, they gave us a gift certificate for the same package for the same time this year! We were absolutely thrilled, as we only expected them to maybe comp a night! SO, we just got back this afternoon, and I'm looking for alternate places to stay next time. They wouldn't let us check in a little early, there were dirty dishes in the sink, and empty aspirin packages on the counter upon check-in, the room was a sauna despite trying to turn the heat down (ironic, huh?), the bed was so incredibly uncomfortable, when we were ready to leave I did a quick sweep of the room and sort of looked under the bed for missing socks and found a bunch of popcorn kernels...we didn't have popcorn at all and the gift shop downstairs was not open at all the whole 4 days we were there. The walls are very thin, and you do hear everything. The location is prime and the staff is friendly, but you have to figure out what you really want in a vacation. If it is clean, quiet and updated, this is not your place. I would stay here again if I couldn't find an alternate.

We took advantage of the romantic interlude package, which included a spacious suite style room, a jacuzzi, a bottle of wine, and a massage (thirty minutes per person), all for a very reasonable price during the winter. The hotel was directly down town, clean, the staff was friendly, and we had everything we needed! The only negative part was the poor water pressure in the shower that morning. We also loved the restaurant across the street, The Red Parrot, and ate there for two meals during our one night stay!

  • Liked — The very affordable Romantic Interlude package and all that was included in that

This hotel is in an awesome location right next to all the shops and restaurants and right on the harbor, but it's very noisy, the walls are paper thin and you can hear everything that goes on in every room below, above and next to you, the decor is very out-dated, the microwaves in the rooms are from the 1980s and the mattresses are very old, this is my 4th time staying hear in the past 17 years and it's the same experience everytime, so this will be my last time here. The heating system is so loud it sounds like a plane is flying right over the room! The coffee cafe is only open like 4 hours a day, so if you don't mind the noise and the bedding being old, it's a great place.

I will say that this hotel is in a good location if you want to be in downtown Newport with quick access to shopping, bars, restaurants, etc. But, there are way too many negatives to ignore. Not only are the walls paper thin which enable you to hear every sneeze, snore, and door closing from people around you, but crowds gather every night right outside this place after the bar downstairs closes and it is really, really loud. And don't expect the front desk to be very accommodating if you complain. A couple of the front desk people there were very nice and helpful, but one in particular was worthless. The queen mattress was pathetic and the furniture and carpet was very dated. Bathrooms were okay. There were even more issues I won't go into. My advice - spend the extra $$$ and stay somewhere else. You won't regret it.

The room was fine, the location was great, however, this is not a hotel for a quiet, romantic getaway. We asked for a quiet room & were put in room 204 - not only could you hear everything happening in the Rhino Bar until 1am, you could hear throught the walls & ceiling. There are absolutely no sound barriers in the walls & we could hear people's conversations all around us. Unless you like to party all night, do not stay at this hotel! Our request for a quiet room was completely ignored - we would never stay here again.

I saw some not so good reviews of the hotel, but figured they were isolated incidents blown out of proportion. We got there about 1:00 pm, I asked if and early check in was possible. No, it wasn't. We were allowed to park the car but had to wait until 3 to check in. When we got in, I was bringing luggage into the bedroom and noticed the waste basket had not been emptied. I told the desk, they sent a guy up to change it. Next I was looking at the mini kitchenette and opened a cabinet door to see old stale crumbs all over the inside. I cleaned it out. Next we noticed it was quite warm in the room. I turned th AC all the way down, but it didn't get cool. I told the desk, they sent a guy up who claimed it WAS working because he could feel air coming out. But it wasn't COOL air, I said. He said just wait a while, it will cool down. We spent that night sweating in the bed. Next day I call again, same guy shows up and says that is just how they are. He says he can get us a fan. That night we slept in the hot bedroom with a noisy box fan running. Next day I call AGAIN, this time a guy with tools comes in and says the control is broken, he will get a new one "after lunch". Finally he comes back, takes down the suspended ceiling in the kitchen and fixes it. Next the bathroom. The vent does not work, the jacuzzi keeps shutting off, it is very cramped. Some light fixtures have burned out bulbs, the living room had some kind of gnats that would buzz us. We were happy to leave. I did go to the mgmt about the AC and was generously comped. Problem is, we did not want to be comped, we wanted a nice 4 night getaway which turned out to be quite dissapointing. Upon checkout, the lady said they were going to renovate, but it "takes time because it is so big". Next time we will go to the Marriott, some place that is not a timeshare where the owners wont pay for renovations.

  • Liked — Location
  • Disliked — Outdated, did not feel clean, hear people above you, no noise insulation, AC did not work, dumpy bar is located in the basement, brings in strange people, was concerned about security of our car.
