Owner description: Society dedicated to the preservation of 9 of Newport's mansions.

The Preservation Society owns 11 Newport Mansions open to the public for an individual membership fee of $50. There are also dual and family memberships available. The staff was very friendly and helpful in planning my visit to Newport. The Society is conveniently located on Bellevue Avenue with parking in the rear of the property. I'm so grateful this society exists to preserve the great mansions of the Gilded Age in Newport.

Newport is famous for its many US Naval training facilities, its great sailing and its many stunning golden age Mansions which are restored and cared for by the Preservation Society. Incredible Mansions like the "Breakers", "The Elms", "Marble House" and "Rosecliff" are museums equal in quality to the Chateaus of the Loire Valley in France. Without the Preservation Society, these gems would have been lost.

Newport is just a great city most of the year, and the mansions maintained by the Society are among the many highlights. In a small area, you will find 8 of the top most visited homes of the wealthy in the US, each with it's own story. But best of all, you're only minutes away from beaches, great shopping, sailing/boat tours, and outstanding restaurants. I live nearby and am always in Newport

First, do go and see the 'cottages' of Newport. They are beautiful and the experience is quite educational - even our young children were 'WOW'd' by the experience - particularly The Breakers.

Second, depending on the size of your party getting a membership may be a good/great deal. But be forewarned - when it says a cottage 'offers' guided tours what they really mean is 'requires'. And the expectation of at least the one docent we tried was that 'tour' meant standing still in one room while she droned on endlessly (and no talking!).

I am so grateful that this organization has taken on the task of preserving and protecting these beautiful homes of the gilded age, as well as many others in Newport. I purchased a membership so that I could see all of the homes. I enjoyed every second of the trip. I feel that joining as a member is an excellent value because you are able to see all of the homes.
