“A pleasure”
Reviewed 10 August 2013 via mobile

We visited he Clarke Cook on a very busy July week, as the International Tennis Hall of Fame Tournament was in progress, yet we were able to easily book a reservation. The hostesses were very helpful in obtaining a time.

We were seated, on time, at a table by the window looking out into Bowen's Wharf. Our waiter was pleasant and service was quite quick even though the restaurant was packed. The food was excellent even given that I am a seafood junkie. Our view provided lots of entertainment from people passing by.

The Clarke Cook House provided a fun, delicious value. Give them a shot. You will not be disappointed.

“Overpriced and Overhyped”
Reviewed 10 August 2013

This long time fixture of the Newport scene clearly has existed based upon location and prior reputation alone. Had lunch on Friday, August 9. While the New England clam chowder was tasty, it was a bit watery.

The Pan Bagnat advertised grilled focaccia bread with an assortment of fillings. Again, while tasty, the chef apparently thought grilling the bread meant placing it on the grill for a millisecond. Yes there were grill marks, but that was the only evidence of the grilling. There was no crunch, and indeed the thickness of the bread made it difficult to eat and took away from the flavors. Truly grilled and crunchy bread would have made the sandwich a knockout.

The chickpea crepes were filled with mostly lettuce... nary a chickpea to be found.

While in a great location, your money is better spent elsewhere.

“Still The Best Food and service In Newport”
Reviewed 7 August 2013

The maitre d is charming -- the waiters are attentive, the food is spectacular from the fresh and tasty carpaccio of tuna appetizer to the amazingly tender and moist wood grilled swordfish to the sinfully delicious "snowball in hell" my meal was excellent made even more excellent by the lovely top porch surroundings -- the sea air blows gently through the romantically lit porch.
Top Newport Choice --

“Not good not bad”
Reviewed 7 August 2013

walking around Newport harbor searching for a good restaurant at sunset and we were looking for activity and we bumped into Clarke Cooke. We were seated right away and grabbed a beer and a glass of wine while studied the menu. Several options for oyysters and we asked which were most like "Island Creek" variety. Waiter went and asked and we decided to try two varieties. 2.95 each and when we got them they were flat and small. Disappointed.
I ordered the lobster salad roll (see pic) and it was not great and not bad. It did have A LOT of celery which I am not fond of.
My wife ordered the sole which again was pretty good.
Service was good, prices like Newport.
Not memorable in any event really.

“Disappointing Menu”
Reviewed 7 August 2013

Lunch on a weekday sunny afternoon with 7 friends. Lots of empty tables upstairs yet had to wait for table set up. Host was irritable and seemed hurried and unpleasant. After wait brought our party upstairs only to have us wait again in beatable blocking the waitstaff. Menu was lacking for lunch.....not many seafood items considering its on the waTer. One asked for well don't fries and was told no the chef was too busy. Ending up with burgers and turkey sandwiches. Burgers not done as ordered and sandwich was missing mushrooms, had to keep asking waiter for things like mayo, water, another drink. Entree came as right after appetizer, too soon. Food was so so and service not great. Very disappointed. True it was a busy day in Newport but this was at 2pm and the restaurant was not busy.
