Good quality, good service, nice full food and bar menu and prices reasonable. Easy walk from several places in town. Very nice atmosphere too.

We visit the Rhumbline because we really like the food and ambiance. Generally we receive great service. Our most recent visit on what was arguably a very busy Friday evening generally was OK except the server's attitude and demeanor, not to mention her lack of polish for this nice a restaurant, was so bad one of our companions, at the end of the meal, asked her if she was happy with her job? The server's response was that she was but it was a very busy night and there were only two servers. Of course that is no excuse. Other facts: 1. There were three servers; and, 2. She was the same way on a slow night a month ago. The owners/managers must be having a hard time finding and retaining great service staff. Again, the food was excellent and we will be back but we now know to ask for another server.

Ambiance and great food. We arrived late for brunch. Brunch is a-la-carte, not buffet. We shared the Lobster salad on a croissant like bun, and a swordfish BLT. Both came with deliciously crunchy fries. The Lobster salad was delicately flavored with lemonnand dill in mayonaise- not heavy. The swordfish came with nice crunchy bacon, all the grease removed. Then, the fries were nicely seasoned, not greasy and crunchy, (I always find that hard to find).

The service was unhurried, and we were not rushed out even though the "closed" sign went up.
The waitress was friendly, and efficient. Did not hover over us, but was available when needed.

The dining area was nice. Sound did not carry and reflect off walls, ceilings, and floors. We had soft jazz music in the background, . It did not have that hurried "high energy" vibe, and conversation was easy. It is a nice place to relax and enjoy the meal and company.

I thought the coffee could have been more upscale, for a place like this, or at least offer it- it was weak. My husband was OK with it though. (I did not ask if they had Cappuccino though)

We brought potential clients to Rhumbline for a "local" Newport dinner. We have been before and always had a nice evening but something has gone wrong there and I am hoping it isn't a trend. The food was very good but the following service issues far outweighed the food and completely marred the evening: 1) The server was very disorganized and confused. She didn't know some things on the menu and seemed flustered every single time she came to the table. 2) They auctioned off the food: "who had the chicken?" How hard is it to do it the right way when there are very well-established and simple techniques to avoid this low-end way to serve food? 3) One of our party didn't even get his food until the four others were nearly done. The server kept saying "it's coming, it's coming" but it didn't come. He was so aggravated and frustrated that he couldn't possibly enjoy it, especially when we were all done and we knew he wasn't enjoying it. 4) And the craziest and most infuriating thing is that one of us wanted a side order of a vegetable to go with an appetizer being ordered for a main course. She said, any vegetable will do - any of the ones you have that accompany the main courses. She was told, absolutely not - you have to order the ENTIRE entrée if you want a side of sautéed spinach. At our request, she kindly asked the kitchen even though she said she has asked before and was told "no". Are they nuts? And they want us to come back? I am so soured on this restaurant and it is sad because we have had many lovely meals in the past.

The Rhumbline was recommended by our Inn keeper, and some of the guests also. It did not disappoint. The food was very good. We did arrive on the late side, and as with some of the other restaurants that we ate at, it is apparent that some of the help,,mainly the waitresses, are ready for the season to be over.
They seemed pooped.
