4 day girls trip. Stayed in room 6. The house was spotless, gleaming hardwood floors throughout and decorated in authentic period of the 1700's right down to the accessories in the rooms. Felt like I was a little girl in the "Ann of Green Gables" bedroom. with the petit point quilt and low windows and the bed was very comfortable, with crisp sheets. Extremely well located in a lovely historic area within walking distance of the ocean on both sides of the peninsula, the cliff walks and shops and restaurants. Andrew and all the staff were extremely accomodating, no ghosts in the house, quiet, great vibes. Secluded little side patio where we enjoyed our wine at night in a lovely litte garden area. Shower was smaller but certainly did the job. Thanks Andrew! I'd definitely return.

Room Tip: Room 6 had a double bed and looked over the house next door not a parking lot or anything.

My husband and I stayed here for only one night. We had one of the smaller rooms on the second floor, but it was just fine for us. The room was clean and the place was very quiet.

Like other reviewers have mentioned, it is part of the "family" of inns now. The check-in is in a separate building, but "all the way down the street" is only 3 doors over. It really isn't inconvenient and, in fact, I preferred not to have other guests in and out of the lobby all day and night checking in and checking out.

Breakfast is included, but isn't served at this location. However, all of the inns owned by this management are on the same street and mere seconds away. The breakfast is perfectly fine, and is easily accessed on your way out for the day.

The location is also perfect given the price. We paid a pretty cheap rate for the height of the season and were located only blocks away from downtown Newport and the water.

We stayed at this bed and breakfast and it was really good. Great location, good service, walking distance to all entertainment and decent rates. The manager was great, he gave us an upgrade without extra charge. The breakfast was really good too.

We stayed on the first floor next to the front door. Room 7. The door opens and closes all night long and when it closes it slams. There was a guy on the second floor locked out of his room. He banged on the door and yelled some girl's name for about 30 minutes until he realized his room was on the first floor. You hear every foot step and every sound. I may be slept for about 3 hours each night before I was awakened. I would try to stay on the top floor and confirm your room has a TV, AC, and bathroom. Would not recommend this to a friend.

Room Tip: Ask for top floor and confirm TV, AC, and Bathroom

We booked the room for 2 nights direct with the Melville House Inn abour 6 weeks before we were due to stay. We specifically booked the David Melville Suite because the significance of the name! When we got there, after driving 250 miles, we couldn't check in at the Melville House Inn and had to go 3 houses down the street, where we were confronted with a sign to say we had to phone the inn keeper to check in. We then found out they had given our suite to someone else. They offered us another standard room and said they would move us the following day. This inconvenienced us because had we'd have known the booking would have been honoured, we would have changed our travel plans, and stayed closer to New York City. We cancelled our booking. We went for a walk around Newport and on our return to collect the car the inn keeper stopped us and said she had explained the mistake to the current occupiers and they had agreed to move into another room, but by this time it was already too late and we had found alternative accomodation in Providence. It was a shame because Newport seemed like a lovely place and the Melville House Inn looked nice from the outside.

There is a reason why there are so many 5-star review on this place--old management. Apparently Inns of Newport acquired this place back in April, and never bothered to update the website to reflect the lack of in-building breakfast and the fact that the couple who owned the place aren't around.

My fiancée and I chose this place based on old Trip Advisor reviews and on a coworker's rec; of course, aside from the "Part of the Inns of Newport" line on the website, we had no way of knowing that what they experienced was no longer available. Perhaps the funny bathroom cleaner smell and atrocious wi-fi (unusably slow) would have been forgivable if I had known beforehand that this place was no longer under the scrutiny of a couple who owned the place and lived in it. I would have been fine with having to leave the building and walk down the street to have breakfast if I didn't think I'd be able to roll out of bed and get some homemade granola (no longer existent). As it was, it is one of the cheaper b&bs around Newport, and it is in a historical building. If they decide to update the website so people know what to expect, that's one thing. It's another to operate under false pretenses. I can't recommend a place that can't update its own website.

Location is phenomenal and parking is a major plus. There are a few B&Bs on the same street operated by Inns of Newport. Apparently breakfast was served in the one next door, not in our own B&B. No one told us that, and I went downstairs in the am expecting to find breakfast going on, but there was no one. There were no hosts seen at all during our stay. I also didn't see any other guests, although I did hear them. In that sense, it felt like staying in an apartment in an apartment building. Not your typical mom and pop B&B kind of place.

It was cute, homey and clean, however. And with the location and parking, we were pleased. Room was very small though, FYI.
