It was our first time staying in Newport. We were on our way to Edgartown in Martha's Vineyard, and came up with the idea of stopping here. We prefer hotels as opposed to B&B's which seem to dominate Newport, so there were not a lot of choices right in downtown Newport. I chose the Newport Harbor Hotel over the Marriott because it was slightly cheaper, but will probably choose the Marriott next time.
The room felt old and small and for $300-$500 per night for three nights (July 4th weekend), we felt cheated. We kept comparing it unfavorably to what we could get in the Carribbean at a top all-inclusive. We had a partial harbor view, because our view was slightly blocked by part of the hotel itself. No bellman, no valet parking, no fitness room. The indoor pool was nice, but from the pool you only see the street not the harbor. No outdoor pool. The food at the restaurant was OK.
The only reason we are not real disappointed is because in the three days we stayed in Newport, it does not seem to get much better in town. The hotel had the most central location and the B&Bs also looked old and small. The only hotel that seemed that it might work better is the Marriott, but I can't be sure of that since we didn't take a look inside.More
