“Great location in the heart of Newport”

We stayed here for one weekend to attend the wedding of a friend. The hotel Viking is a great historical property. Well appointed with both modern and antique design. The rooms were beautiful, clean and comfortable.

Pros:
- Central location; walking distance to everything.
- Wonderful French patisserie and chocolatier across the street.
- Beautifully appointed property
- Clean rooms; comfortable beds
- Well equipped gym, pool and spa

Cons:
- Rooms could use some updating; tiny bathrooms
- Limited dining choices in the hotel

We stayed 3 nights at Hotel Viking and can't wait to return. We loved everything about this beautiful hotel, it's location and just Newport, RI. We traveled all over back east for 23 days & ended our last 3 nights here. This was truly our favorite hotel & destination. We LOVED the staff; they were courteous, helpful, fun and always smiling. EACH one told us, b/c we asked, it was the best place to work & they loved the management & it showed. We had a 3 day pkg of free breakfasts, which were A++, & free valet parking. Dinner was good but the room was poorly lit. Our king bed was extremely comfortable. The trolly & bus were right in front & you are only minutes from the mansions, the gorgeous harbor w/ tons of restaurants & shopping.
One thought...review your bill. We were overcharged $5 at dinner, $4.80 on our room & they forgot to give us one of 3 breakfast coupons. Each time we brought it to their attn., they were extremely apologetic and rectified the bill or coupon immediately.

The last time we were here, just about two years to the day, we had to call hotel security to get the room next to us to quiet down, and the halls looked like a bar the next morning. This was completely different. Our room was nicer, the hotel clean and the staff was great. The guys that helped with our bags and parked the car were awesome. The restaurant was also much better (other than the wait Saturday morning, seems they should serve at the bar or use that space there for more tables). The food, breakfast, was also really good. Overall we had a really nice stay.

My husband and I stayed here recently on our anniversary trip. The hotel was great. Its about an 8 minute walk to the warf in Newport and a 5 minute drive to the mansions. The staff and room were excellent. I recommend getting the breakfast package with valet parking if possible.

The spa....Was AWFUL. My husband and I each got a massage and body scrub. It is by far the worst massage I have ever received. Despite paying for a deep tissue massage, and reminding my therapist of this multiple times during my visit, I received a therapeutic massage (at best - it was more like she was just rubbing lotion on me and not massaging anything). I recommend staying at the hotel and AVOIDING the spa. My husband said his experience was the same. Definitely not the service I would expect to receive for $480.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the entrance. It was loud in ours due to traffic.

Just wrapping up a wonderful two day stay here for our anniversary. We fell in love with Newport and all it has to offer several years ago. We had waited however till this weekend to visit the Hotel Viking. This hotel has everything you would expect from a world-class hotel in an upscale town like Newport. Excellent on all levels! From the incredibly efficient and polite valet service to the wonderful pool/hot-tub and fitness center. The rooms are very comfortable...ours had a nice view of the bridge. There is a roof-top deck that looks like it would be very enjoyable but it isn't open this time of year. Room service is top-notch. If I had to come up with one negative thing about our entire weekend it would be that the bar area needs to improve service and food quality. All staff were polite, but the bar could definitely use improvements in efficiency and quality control. The one negative however was completely overshadowed by all the greatness and makes a rating of excellent easy to give. Highly recommend this hotel for family and couples.

Stayed here while doing a Globus tour called Cape Cod and the Islands. They saved the best for last. Lovely pool and hot tub, walking distance to shops and restaurants. You got your exercise walking to your room.

We stayed at Hotel Viking for a single night to celebrate a special occasion. Beautiful facilities, great location, and very nice rooms. The property was everything we could ask for.

However, there were a series of errors with the service that prevents it from getting an Excellent vote. Despite calling twice in advance and getting confirmation it would be done, the room service that was supposed to be in the room before we arrived failed to show. And after calling the front desk and being told it would arrive immediately, it didn't show up until an hour later.

And upon check-out I was charged for my room despite paying for it with reward points. I pointed this out to the front desk (by showing their confirmation from the reward provider) and they seemed unable or disinterested in trying to resolve the problem. They simply said that it was in the system as a discounted rate and not paid entirely by points.

The reason they still get a Very Good, when their management was made aware of both misfires, they took care of the problems immediately. Mistakes do happen and properties should be judged on how they take care of them and Hotel Viking did well.
