“The "Real" Hawaii Hike”
Reviewed 24 January 2013

A nice 2-1/2 mile hike with parking below the Hawaii nature Center. Be prepared for over 800 feet of climb in the first 3/4 of a mile. This is not a wide, well-groomed trail but a real experience of the Hawaii trails. Beautiful views worth the extra effort it takes to climb what the locals refer to as "Hogsback". Bring water, it will take approx 1 hour to complete the 2-1/2 mile lower loop. If you are feeling adventurous, you can take a 1/2 mile detour and visit Pu'u Ulaka'a Park overlooking downtown Honolulu

“Grand-daughter attends Summer camp...”
Reviewed 12 June 2010

Grand-daughter attends Summer camp program for two years. Has been both very educational and loads of fun. We hike as a family . . . Was do-able even with 22 month old in back pack carrier! If you enjoy the beauty and excitement of Hawaii's nature and aina ... this is the place to explore.

“Great hike, albeit rainy”
Reviewed 18 August 2009

We took a 2.5 mile loop hike through the Makiki valley starting at the Nature Center, and it was challenging but beautiful. A great place to get away from the city, although come prepared for rain. It can be sunny in the city and pouring back in the valley. You can begin several hikes here ranging from one mile to 10+. Would love to return on our next trip to Oahu. We did not go into the Nature Center, however, so I can't speak to what is inside the small building itself. But there are many interpretive signs at the trailheads, along with printed maps to take along.

“Great for kids”
Reviewed 15 August 2008

This is one my favorite places to take my kids. The hiking trails are not too difficult. There's a small stream. It's a wonderful bit of nature, just minutes from the city.
