This hotel is quite pleasant. The architecture and and restoration are impressive. Service is attentive. The location can't be beat. One downside is the pricey rental chairs offered by the hotel. In addition, the hotel has many cool nooks and crannies in the lobby areas that could serve as a splendid cocktail lounge. The hotel has no lobby classic cocktail lounge. For a property with this stature, it should offer something other than a beach bar. Further, the hotel should better explain what amenities can be utilized at its sister properties - The Moana Surfrider and Waikiki Sheraton.

In hindsight my expectations were probably too high for this resort; not doubt set by the liberal use of the word "luxury" on the hotel website. The hotel itself, the location, and beach frontage are all spectacular; everything else is mediocre. Threadbare bed-sheets, tiny towels and passable food. If like me when you think of luxury you think plush towels, crisp linen, and fine dinning you'll be disappointed.

Can't complain about the service but I also don't have anything particularly good to say either. Don't get me wrong, the staff are uber friendly but so was my taxi driver; I mean, it's Hawaii!

I probably wouldn't recommend this place to a friend. Whilst we weren't staying in a suite we did go for an oceanfront room and weren't trying to save money. We still had a good enough time but this place bills itself as high end so you expect (and pay!) for that little something extra.

You all may as well be in the same room. Just awful. No sleep both nights with two different neighbors. You can hear everything. Bad idea to have connecting doors. Waste of money to stay here. No privacy. May as well stay in a cheap motel. Seriously, need to go home to get rest. Ruined vacation. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Dear teriPortlandOregon,
We truly regret to learn that your stay with us did not meet your expectations due to noise levels from the neighboring room and we apologize that this hampered your opportunity for a restful night's sleep. In circumstances like these, our guest service managers typically offer a room move, if available, and we apologize if such offering was not made upon notification of disturbance. Please know that it is always our intention to provide exceptional experiences to our guests and we truly regret that this was not the case for your stay. We again apologize for our shortcomings in terms of meeting your expectations and we thank you for your honest review.

For calling itself a Luxury Collection it certainly did not feel that way. The room had a clean look but right after checking in as I was organizing our bags a small cockroach came out crawling from the Kleenex box in the bathroom! Disgusted, I went to front desk to raise my concern, the front desk personnel was polite but did not even seem surprised about it! Basically she said there is nothing they can do other than, fumigate the room.

If you put close attention to detail, you can find in the room dirty spots, cracks and dead bugs by the window..

In addition, another minus point was that the reclining chairs at the "private beach" came with extra cost.. and the beach certainly did not feel very private.
The swimming pool is very very small and the Jacuzzi needed some cleaning for sure.

Did not feel too happy given that I was the one that convinced my husband that this was the ideal place to stay.

On a positive note, the hotel bar staff was nice and certainly the historic scene is attractive.
Location:good and convenient as well but given that other hotels are in the same area for much less cost, I do not think I would stay at the Royal Hawaiian again.

Step back in time to vintage Hawaiian paradise. Today's luxury with yesterday's quality of vintage decor. Luxury and quality at every turn yet modernized still keeping the subtle touches of yesteryear. Service was wonderful and beach access was at your doorstep.

Just spent 10 days at this gorgeous hotel right on Waikiki beach! The rooms are well appointed in the tower with amazing views of the surfers and Diamond Head! I suggest trying for the tower room instead of a garden as then the views are less of the beach and more of the gardens. Instead of paying $150 for the Luau we were able to reserve a table at the beach bar which allowed us to watch all of the festivities without the price. This is a historic place and has been updated. However there are a few glitches but they concern small housekeeping issues and they took care of those right away! The pool and its staff were amazing, kudos to the bar staff and wait staff as they always provided water and amenities when needed. This property is the "BEST" location in Waikiki by far. Right in the middle of all of the action. However do not pay to eat at the 5 Star Buffet, food was less than fair and mostly cold. Instead right outside the resort is one of the best Cheescake Factories I have eaten at and they even serve the local Loco Moco dish a concoction you need to see to believe. Overall we were quite pleased and would recommend highly for vacation or business.

Room Tip: try for the tower for a beach view if you need that

I dislike the term 'iconic' as it can be over-used with people applying it to everything from a sporting hero to a family auto often accompanied by doubtful claims as far as a history of excellence. But, The Royal Hawaiian is truly iconic in every sense of the word and worthy of its inclusion in the Luxury Collection.

On Waikiki there are so many hotels to choose from and our choice to stay at the Royal Hawaiian was based more on an emotional attachment to the property recalling memories of previous visits rather than considerations of cost, location, standard of service or any of the usual norms one expects of all hotels.

The services delivered at the Royal Hawaiian were consistently of a uniformly high standard from the meet-greet at the front entrance, exotic welcome drink while being processed by a very efficient charming operator, courteous baggage and room familiarisation, discreet efficient housekeeping, smiling bar people and humorous beach lounge guys. Put simply, it was pretty much as we remembered from our last visit

Our needs were modest and we selected a small room overlooking the gardens rather than the beach as we were staying only a few days and we believe rooms are for sleeping. For many couples like us the accommodation was more than adequate, traditional, comfortable and conveniently positioned away from but only a short step to elevators.

We prepaid and kept the hotel informed of our scheduled arrival, which doubtless helped smooth our way.

The Royal Hawaiian's public areas are well maintained notwithstanding the steady flow of ordinary tourists adding to the in-house guests floating through. By way of comparison several of the hotels nearby appear poorly maintained.

Food offered at the Royal Hawaiian's weekend buffet was we believe good value for money but privately ranked by us a shade below that offered in similar top properties elsewhere in the world e.g. The Fullerton, Singapore. The shade difference was that the Royal Hawaiian's seafood had been thawed from frozen rather than chilled.

The only 'cross' against the hotel's inclusions can be put against the 'Free Mai Tai' box. When one pays for the second round the first Mai Tai is a pale comparison. OK you might ask 'Where have you been living?" But it isn't going to break the bank to do it right every time is it?

In summary: The Royal Hawaiian manages its history very well, without being stuffy or toffee-nosed about it. It believes in holding true to its origins and move with the times while ensuring guests are the focus of attention. As an inveterate beachcomber I did not want to use the pool, which incidentally is small one may say pokey, others may describe it as intimate. Putting that aside it was great to be back in the thick of it in the 'heart' of Honolulu.
