“magical!”
Reviewed 8 October 2009

The Royal Hawaiian is an oasis in overbuilt- highrise ridden Wikiki beach. It's one of the first hotels ever built on the beach and with the rennovation they've preserved some of the beautiful historical elements. The staff is wonderful, you're greeted with leis and they make sure to treat you with a bottle of sparkling wine and treats especially if they know you're celebrating a special event. I wouldn't recommend the tower rooms since they look like hotel rooms in any average chain. The main hotel rooms are stunning and feel very special. If you need a huge bathroom they're not for you but honestly, how much time do you need to spend in a bathroom when you're on vacation?

We ended up at this hotel for a few nights after the Sheraton next door botched our reservations and couldn't get us the room we were confirmed for. Everything at this hotel is top notch. the grounds are lush and very quiet - much different than the train-station feel of some of the large hotels on the strip. It's set back from the busy Kalakaua Ave, but still within walking distance from it. A really great location.

Unlike the other hotel we stayed at, the customer service was top-notch, and really made us feel like VIP guests. It's a little more money than most of the other hotels, but it's worth it if you are looking for an extremely nice and quiet place to spend your vacation.

Much has been written about the Royal Hawaiian (The pink palace) and it is all true. Amongst all the glitter, glitz, rasamataz and pace of Wikiki beach, the Royal is able to provide a sanctury, exceptional service, attentive staff and standards that many other hotels can only dream about.

I have stayed here for over 10 years and loved the hotel and would stay again, but the renovation is a disappointment. The hotel staffers that have been there for years are wonderful, and without them, it would not be nearly as nice. The rooms look like a W hotel, with dark, cold colors with ugly shades of green. They used to be very warm, with nice beiges and pink accents. I wish they had stayed with the old colors, or something close. The Surf Room has been ruined. The joy of it was the indoor/outdoor feel -- even if you were several rows back from the front, you could feel the ocean. Now, the room is called the Azure, the doors are shut and it is heavily air conditioned, and it is chopped up. There are cabanas IN FRONT of the restaurant along the best beach-side location. No one uses the cabanas as they cost $500 a day. I was there two days and not once did anyone use them. This is an example of the very bad decisions made in the renovation. The beautiful chandeliers in the public areas have been removed, another dumb decision. Everyone loved the chandeliers. They are considered very important in fine New York and European hotels. The air conditioning system was not updated, and it needed it. I heard people say that the "old money" who have seen this will not return. Nonetheless, the building itself is wonderful and its possible to have a very nice stay. If the owners are smart, when it comes time to repaint and do ordinary maintenance in a few years, they will go back to the old color scheme.

Mahalo nui loa for your review of your recent stay at The Royal Hawaiian. We are sorry you are disappointed with the renovation of the resort, but would like to share with you some facts about this historic resort that you may not be aware of.

The chief architect of the renovation, Rob Iopa from WCIT Architecture is Native Hawaiian and he desired the renovation of the "Pink Palace of the Pacific" to be respectful of both the rich cultural heritage of the resort's location on Waikīkī Beach and the its history as an iconic symbol of luxury and romance during the birth of 20th century tourism to Hawaii. Mr. Iopa worked very closely with Philpotts and Associates, the design firm, studying the original blueprints and vintage photographs of the hotel. It was their intent to restore and revitalize the original spirit of 1927 hotel to The Royal Hawaiian. Many of the local residents who know and love The Royal appreciate their work. In fact, since reopening in January 2009, The Royal Hawaiian has received a "Preservation Honor Award" from the Historic Hawaii Foundation and a Kukulu Hale Award from NAIOP Hawaii.

Some, we realize, loved the resort just the way they remembered it 10, 20 or even 40 years ago but even at that time, it had been changed from the original in numerous ways. In 1927, only the exterior of the hotel was pink, not the sheets or pillowcases. The glass chandelier (it wasn't crystal) that you remember was actually a hand-me-down from the Moana Surfrider which underwent a historic restoration in 1989. The outdoor dining area of the old Surf Room restaurant was installed in the early 1980s when Wes Zane (now proprietator of Formaggio Wine Bars) worked as a busboy and suggested the idea to his manager. The new restauarant Azure is now one of the most popular seafood restaurants in Hawaii and is sought for its breathtaking design and wonderful, imaginative cuisine. Sante magazine will be recognizing the restaurant with an award later next month. The beachfront cabanas are a wonderful place to dine in the evening for a romantic dinner or other special occasion or personal treat.

We hope that when you return to Hawaii, you will visit The Royal Hawaiian again and want to learn more about the amazing history of the resort. When we reopened, the vast majority of our longtime employees returned to work and are so proud of all of the changes to the icon they love so much. We would be happy to share with you why we consider The Royal such a special place and how the renovation has restored the grandeur and romance back to the first luxury resort in the Pacific. We are sure you will be amazed by the incredible details of our storied past.

Whilst in Hawaii we stayed at three Waikiki Beachfront Hotels all were good. Although comparatively overpriced, The Royal Hawaiian stood out. Well positioned between the beach and the main shopping area the hotel was inspiring, situated right on the beach
we could have swum every day had I not been ill and had my husband not had a middle ear infection. We were there for the Waikiki Roughwater swim but my husband could not go in it. No matter, we shall return and hopefully to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel next year with luck.

We loved the original portion of the hotel, and the nice new pool area, but the rooms in the tower were not five stars to say the least. I would give them more of three stars review. We had to switch rooms after our first room's bathroom had not been serviced properly (I'll leave out the nasty details), and both the bathrooms we had were pretty beaten up especially the tub/shower combo. The hotels itself was really cool, but I suggest if you are going to fork out the big bucks make sure you get a room in the original portion of the hotel.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Royal Hawaiian.
Staff very friendly and helpful.
Room was comfortable and very clean, plenty of room considering we hardly spent any time in it.
Great beach and pool area with wonderful views of Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach
Within walking distance to most everything
Only disappointment - we did not get to stay longer!
Thank-you Starwood Hotels - another great trip - looking forward to our next stay somewhere in the world!
