“Ideal hotel for honeymoon”
Reviewed 28 July 2011

We loved our week at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. It’s location on the beach front was excellent; no better way to wake up in the morning than overlooking such a gorgeous beach. We initially had a room with a partial view which was good as you could see both the beach and the city; we were on the top floor which helped. As on honeymoon we decided to upgrade to an Ocean Front room. The room was the same but the view was truly beautiful. Duke’s Restaurant was good, especially the cocktails. Best to get a seat outside, overlooking the stunning beach.

Room Tip: Partial view rooms are still very good, but get one high up as you have a better view

I have been to Hawaii 5 times and I'm going back in January 2012. I've stayed at The Royal Hawaiian, Moana Surfrider and The Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. Outrigger is definitely the most value for the money.
We had an Ocean front room and breakfast included each morning. The location of this hotel is awesome, rooms are fresh and cleaned very well, elevators are quick, laundry machines right outside on lobby floor, cheap (for Waikiki) food and drinks right downstairs at Duke's.
Only thing that wasn't so nice was no free chairs and umbrellas on the beach, so we went to the abc store and spent $30 for 2 chairs and an umbrella, used them for two weeks then gave them away.

I stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks having stayed at HHV previously. The location is fantastic - very central to everything especially The Cheescake Factory (amazing food). Over the road is the International Market Place. I ate here most nights for great value especially for the steak and cajan prawns, nightly entertainment was free while you ate. It is then just a trolley ride to Alla Moana Shopping Centre, Wallmart etc. So for convenience its brilliant. As for the hotel itself - staff were really good especially the bell staff who were fantastic. I had an Ocean View room on the 8th floor which was ok but not as good as I had at HHV. Couple of little things didnt work but nothing to stress about. The bed was definitley not as wonderful as HHV but still good. There are larger rooms but they dont have the views except of the hotel next door. They cut down on the size of the rooms closer to the beach so they can offer more with ocean views -obviously. You have a better view of the hotel next door. In the end I upgraded at quite a cost to a suite on the 15th floor with real ocean views. Now this was fantastic. If you can afford it I would really recommend it. Bit over the top for just me but it accomodated all my shopping really well!
I ate at Dukes for breakfast each morning and had the buffet and look it was good food but compared to HHV seemed a bit more limited. If you dont get away much you will love it and its really popular. Its right on the beach and by the pool area and has a really relaxed atmosphere and is reasonably price for breakfast - $US15 plus tip when I was there I think.
I was recommended to stay on the Diamond Head side of the hotel as it was quieter at night and this was a good tip I think. As for the beach area - its a lot smaller than HHV and you pay so much by the hour for the privilage and for an umbrella and lounge and its not really cheap. I would imagine in the height of the season you might struggle to get a spot if you didnt get there early and if you planned to stay all day its a bit expensive. Having said that some hotels dont even have any access to the beach and I hate chlorine so the beach is a must for me. Also the pools get really crowded which I personally hate. So I have to say would probably stay there again
I would probably stay there again.

Aloha pineridgesuffolks,
We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. Upgrading to a Ocean Front Suite was a good choice it’s a little pricey however for the cost you get a breathtaking view and a area in your room to stretch out and relax. We love our Ocean Front location, it allows our guests access to a great sandy beach right in front. We would love to welcome you back as a return guest. Mahalo

We have been staying at the Outrigger Waikiki for years, ocean front room for years. Its a great, comfortable hotel. The pool is one of the better ones on Waikiki, large, deep and has a great view of the beach/ocean. They are re-furbishing next year, so call ahead to see. The staff is always warm and friendly, we particularly enjoy the pool attendants, Danny, Peter and Ray. The rooms are well-appointed, comfortable and clean. The A/C was quiet and efficient. The bathroom was spacious. We ordered a microwave at no additional cost. And the fridge is actually a fridge..not a stupid mini bar! I have stayed at the Moana and the Royal Hawaiian, bu the Outrigger is just more easy-going, kicked-back, island-like.
My only complaint is that we have been staying there for several years and booking the most expensive rooms year after year (a Diamond Head suite at Christmas (over $700 per night)) and they do not offer a loyalty program. If the economy stays tight, this may govern our decisions in the future. Great place, great staff! I disagree with some of the other reviews - higher floors are not always better. The ocean front rooms around the 4th - 8th floor are great, you feel like you are 'on the beach' - not hovering above it in a tower.

Room Tip: Beachside is quieter than the city-side (noisy due to early AM garbage and delivery). Diamond Head s...

Our family chose the Hotel based on the reviews. I hope my review will help someone choose the "Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach" for their vacation as well. We had an amazing time! it was our first time to Hawaii and it could not have been better. My Husband and I took advantage of the Vow Renewal ceremony, it was magical, as we shared the experience with other couples, we did find it to be very personal. Everyone we came into contact with was very friendly, very professional, and always seemed just plain happy. The Hotel and its location are exactly as I had expected from the reviews, actually it was better. Drew at "Dukes" made a very special night even more memorabile. Friends from Japan had come and we met for dinner. Our reservation had been set for 7:30, due to a very busy night at "Dukes", we did have a wait. However Drew made the evening spectacular! We left with the fondest memories of Hawaii and The Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach! A million Thank You's to everyone. Yes, we will be back!

Room Tip: We had requested a room above the 5th. floor with a "Partial Ocean View", we were placed o...

My wife and I stayed at the Outrigger Waikiki for three nights. We chose it because of an American Express discount promotion and because it was within easy walking distance of shopping and our favorite restaurants. Unlike the Outrigger Reef, the Outrigger Waikiki has a sandy beach, and it is right in the middle of the Waikiki action, for better (views, beachside) or for worse (amplified music from beachside entertainment, crowds).

Location
We prefer Duke's Lane, Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, and King's Village for shopping, and every time we visit, we eat at Odoriko Japanese Restaurant in King's Village, Suntory Japanese Restaurant in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, and Hy's Steakhouse. For the first time in ten years, we found the quality of the steaks at Hy's to be less than perfect, but we ate there twice. We often enjoy lunch at House Without a Key in the Halekulani Hotel. You can walk to all of these places from the Outrigger Waikiki, and when you look at the ocean from your lanai, you are between the first two hotels on Waikiki: the Moana and the Royal Hawaiian (see photo).

Check-in and check-out
Our flight landed at 8 a.m., and we took the Roberts Airport Wakiki Shutttle bus ($15 round trip per person) to the hotel and checked in at 10 a.m., intending to leave our bags at the bell desk until a room was available, but we were given room 1126 on a higher floor with a view of the ocean and two princess-sized beds. We were able to slake our hunger at Duke's and then sleep off our jetlag. It was a wonderful start.

Breakfast
There are so many good breakfast places nearby that we did not get the breakfast portion of the promotional package. Seattle’s Best coffee by the entrance offers a good breakfast deal.

Restaurants
Duke's and Hula Grill were both full at 8 p.m. Both are highly rated by TripAdvisor members, possibly for the ocean view, but we were not highly impressed with the food. We preferred to walk to Suntory Japanese Restaurant in Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, where the food and service were superb--much better than at the nearby and more trendy Doraku Japanese Restaurant.

Crowds
We were staying during school vacation, and the hotel seemed full. Lobby and public areas are low-ceilinged which gives impression of crowding. The elevators seem slow, probably because so many people are using them. The beach seemed crowded except late at night and early in the morning.

The Truth about those Coupons
Those who decide to stay at the Outrigger should know that the hotel provides a booklet of coupons from nearby merchants. The coupons offered much less than at first impression. The best we found was the Seattle's Best Coffee deal: a continental breakfast for $8.95. Hawaiian Accessories in the hotel shops give you a 20% discount on only one item, but it's easy to assume it's on all items. Others such as Coco Cove at Beach Walk (not the one across the street on Kalakaua Ave) neglect to mention that only your check-out clerk knows for sure what items qualify for the discount.

Quiet enjoyment
We could hear the couple in the room next to our bed when they were talking in a normal volume. When toilets flush the compressed air can be heard from far away. We could hear the chatter of families in the room next to us and in the halls. The Royal Hawaiian had one night program that was pretty loud, and the Outrigger had a reggae concert on another night. When the noise dies down, you can go to sleep hearing the sound of waves, all the way up on the 11th floor.

Room
The room was clean and neat. The curtain was difficult to open and close, and the steel rod for pulling the curtain came off. The next morning we found that the rod had been replaced on the curtain, and it worked fine. The two beds were a bit narrow, but we were able to sleep together on one of them. My wife felt the pillows were not very comfortable. The desk has two chairs, one on each side, which is convenient. There was a shortage of wall plugs. Only two wall plugs were not being used by lamps, etc. It is hard to stop looking at the beach from the lanai because it is like a circus with so many activities going on at once.

Wi-fi and free phone calls
Wi-fi in the rooms was free. We mostly used the LAN cable, and access was free and reasonably fast. This is a very big plus as far as we are concerned. It was a strange feeling not being charged hotel rates for phone calls to anywhere in North America, but we got used to it quickly. Nice benefit.

Service
We appreciated the early check-in at 10 a.m. and having such a good room. Maid service was efficient, and we appreciated that the pull rod for curtains was repaired without our asking.

This is the hotel for those who like to be in the center of the Waikiki Beach action. Next time, we will seek a place that is less boisterous, but we appreciate all that the hotel offers, and we highly recommend it.

.

This place was perfect for our family of Mum, Dad and 2 teen boys. Great location handy to everything. If you go for ocean view, get a room high up, and the Moana side is probably quieter than the Royal Hawaiian side. The restaurants are all good value for money, great service and great food, the breakfast buffet particularly impressive. Staff are very helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. We sat on the lanai and watched the turtles swimming at Waikiki each afternoon, - awesome,- and planned our next visit.

Room Tip: Ocean view higher up is better, great views from Moana side without the Sheraton to block the view.
