“Best day trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 June 2011

We spent the day her because it is a military resort. The place was fantatic. The pool areas and beaches were excellent. The dinning room was wonderful and the food was delicious. The burgers at poolside were great as was the ice cream. We loved it!!!

Room Tip: did not use the rooms, only the day by the pool.

Great location but other amenities so so--- rooms outdated with really bad bed linens. Good deal on the breakfast buffet

My wife and I stayed at the Hale Koa for 7 nights during our honeymoon. Hotel is right on the beach in Waikiki. It’s nice because the Hale Koa is on the widest part of Waikiki beach and far enough away from the main part of Waikiki that it doesn't have the huge crowd that other parts of Waikiki beach have. The hotel has 2 pools, one is large for all ages and the other is an "adult" pool that is smaller, but has a hot tub. The larger pool has no hot tub. The adult pool is only open to guests over the age of 18. There is a beachfront bar next to the larger pool and you are allowed to take your drinks into the pool area. There is no bar at the adult pool.

The restaurants at the hotel are a mixed bag. Bibas and the Koko Cafe were reasonably priced and had very good food. The small restaurant on the way to the beach (Happy's I believe) is VERY cheap and is good for breakfast or lunch. Our only disappointment was the Warrior Lounge. Staff at the Warrior Lounge seemed very unfriendly and our service was beyond poor....ended up leaving after one drink. Could've just been a bad day, but it was sub-par in our experience. The PX is also very convenient for snacks, drinks, and they have a surprisingly large souvenir collection...about the same as any souvenir shop in Waikiki.

The walking distance to downtown Waikiki is about 15-20 minutes. The Hale Koa itself is situated on a 72-acre plot of land, so there is a lot of nice park type area to walk around with benches and grills if that’s your thing. The Outrigger Beach Hotel is 2 hotels down from the Hale Koa and they have $3.50 Mai Tai's at their beach front bar from 12-noon to 5pm :) A hidden gem for sure.

We thought the room size was a bit small, but you're not there to spend time in the room anyways! Our biggest complaint was the door between rooms seemed very thin. Every morning around 6am we were woken by people in the next room talking. They weren't yelling or talking loud, but their voices were clearly audible in our room. Besides that, the room was very clean and the balcony had a great view. We actually stayed in a partial ocean view for 4 nights and were then "upgraded" to the oceanfront room. Suffice to say, the view from the partial ocean view was much better than the oceanfront view. Our partial ocean room was in the Ilima Tower, 12th floor. The Hale Koa is comprised of 2 towers, however we opted to stay in the Ilima Tower because it was recently remodeled and has more spacious rooms.

Parking is across the street in a private garage and the Hale Koa charges $7 per day for unlimited access to the garage. The lobby is open air and very nice, although the front desk staff can be extremely slow. We also attended the Hale Koa's luau on the Monday night we were there. When I was in Hawaii previously I had attended Jermaine’s luau and the Hale Koa's was much nicer in my opinion, and cheaper :) Our tickets were $49 per ticket and we purchased them a few weeks in advance. We saw many people go to the activities desk the day of the luau and get turned down because they were sold out, so be sure to book in advance if you plan on attending. Luau is every Monday and Thursday night. Food was good and the entertainment was great, we highly recommended it. Plus, it’s at your own hotel which means no long bus rides or traveling to the luau site.

All in all, it was a very nice hotel that we would stay at again in a heartbeat and highly recommend to anyone able to stay there. I can't give it the full five-stars because of small issues like being able to clearly hear through the adjoining door in our room, the poor service at the Warrior Lounge, and the slow front desk service. Despite these minor issues though, it is still an awesome hotel that has great amenities and is located directly on Waikiki beach. You can’t beat the price for what you get. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: High floor, Ilima Tower, Partial Ocean

The Hale Koa MWR hotel is fantastic for military members (active, retired, etc.). There are two pools that were not ever very crowded, even though the hotel was sold out. It neighbors the Hilton Resort. Waikiki beach is literally in the backyard! Parking is across the intersection from the hotel entrance and is the cheapest you'll find in Honolulu. There is a full Exchange below the front desk, which was extremely usefull. You can get food, beer, and put it in your fridge in your room. Reserve a "Partial Ocean View" room and get there right at check-in and request a high floor and a corner room (we were in 1402)....AMAZING! It was cheaper than an Ocean View Room, but had a 270-degree view of the city AND Waikiki beach, which is even better.

Room Tip: Req partial ocean view ending in

We went to Hawaii in May and stayed at the Hale Koa Hotel. While it is for military personel, my brother in law sponsored us and we spent a week on Wakaiki Beach. We found it to be a very nice hotel and it has the best locattion on the beach. The only problem we found was in finding a place to smoke a cigar. The military has really changed and many of the guests that had stayed there previously, said the hotel had as well. That, however, was the worst thing and was easily put behind us. Best beach, good food, and great location made it a very nice week.

We stayed 7 nights at the Hale Koa May 25-June 1, 2011. My husband and I stayed here 10 years ago and vowed to return. A family of four shared an oceanview on the 10th floor of the "old tower". I had requested the newer tower almost a year in advance based on reviews but the check in lady assured me we wouldn't be disappointed. She was right! Our room was perfect and updated from the last time we visited. I'm not sure what the other reviewers were complaining about. We had great service every where we went. Great to be among fellow military families. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet at KoKo Cafe but not dinner. We ate at Bibas for appetizers and it was good. We mostly ate off site. We purchase our discounted tickets for all our excursions at Pearl Harbor MWR. Rent a car, it's the only way to enjoy the island. Take a trip to the north shore and stop at Macky's shrimp truck and get shaved ice from Matsumoto's. We tried the garlic butter and hot and spicy...a hit! The Hale Koa Luau was great. One luau is plenty. Plan to spend a day at Hanuama Bay...snorkeling or just enjoying the beach...they are closed Tuesdays. Plan to visit Bellows Air Force Station...beautiful calm beaches with magnificent views. The Polynesian Cultural Center is a must do....only do the admission to the center and the show...the "Luau/dinner" was horrible and was the concensus for those we came in contact with. The drive to Bellows from Hanuama Bay is breathtaking and has stop points to take it all in. I am already looking forward to our return visit.
