We arrived a few minutes before six p.m. at Alan Wong's Pineapple Room in the Ala Moana Macy's. The room was largely empty, but the staff was cordial and helpful. Our starters, the gyoza and sort of a poke napolean, were delicious--four stars. The entrees were a mixed bag. My Jidori Chicken came warm but not hot and the chicken was dry. In retrospect I should have sent it back. A friend in our party of 3 later commented that his loco moco was delicious but also only warm--and he regretted not sending his back. The salmon was good. Maybe barely three stars on two of the entrees. Desserts were again excellent, both the intense chocolate pudding and the strawberry tiramisu. Four stars again. My sense is that the wait staff was on top of things (harder than it seems in a slow house) while the kitchen was not quite up to snuff on the entrees. Still, at these prices and with all the choices in Honolulu, I would think twice about going back anytime soon.
