Owner description: The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

Our tour bus took us through the cemetery. As you're not permitted to disembark from buses, our driver gave a solemn description to us about the cemetery, and who was buried there. The driver was very informative. This is a historic place of interest and well worth a visit.

The setting is very pretty and coupled with the quiet is very solemn. The views of Honolulu are very nice. It is worth the time to visit. The walk to the top requires good shoes and stamina.

Another place that if you didn't get the chills or feel like you were standing on hallowed ground, then your ether dead or you should be.

Punchbowl is a beautiful, awe-inspiring place to take in the natural beauty of the crater itself while remembering those who served.

We visited on the same day as USS Arizona. Take the time to get out and look around the memorial itself is a work of art with large mosaic maps of the Pacific theatre of Operations. Take the walk to the lookout the view is outstanding and you may see some rather moving quotes on markers along the way.
