Owner description: The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

This was a very beautiful place to visit. I wish that the tour we were on stopped and we were able to get out and enjoy it longer than just a bus drive around it!

A must do following a trip to Pearl Harbor. The grounds are so well maintained and the view from there is fantastic. To be there and realized you are surrounded by all those brave men.......

“The cemetery has the finest unfettered views of Waikiki and Honolulu”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 November 2013

There is no other place on earth, where the entrance to a cemetery, has unfettered views of Waikiki and Honolulu, the finest on Oahu. What a stunning resting place for more than 50,000 war veterans. The site is believed to be the place where ancient Hawaiians offered sacrifices to their gods and is pristine- white within a background of volcanic rock.
This is no walk in the park as it encompasses 112 acres. Wish they had golf carts for tourists to whizz around in.

“Not a must see”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 November 2013

Not as moving a sight as Arlington National Cemetery, this final resting place sits within the crater of an extinct volcano, Punchbowl. Great views of Honolulu, and meaningful as a memorial to those who served in the military. One of the few places open early if your jet lag has you awake in the early a.m.
