The Museum was established to house the extensive collection of Hawaiian artifacts and royal family heirlooms of the Princess, and has expanded to include millions of artifacts, documents and photographs about Hawai'i and other Pacific island cultures. Today, Bishop Museum is the largest museum in the state and the premier natural and cultural history institution in the Pacific, recognized throughout the world for its cultural collections, research projects, consulting services and public educational programs. It also has one of the largest natural history specimen collections in the world. Serving and representing the interests of Native Hawaiians is a primary purpose of the Museum. “So much to see and read”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Give yourself plenty of time and be aware that The Bus takes 45 mins plus from waikiki to get there. Get to see downtown honolulu and Chinatown on the way but it eats into our time. We missed the hula class and skipped the planetarium in favour of the lava show which was really worth while. Could have spend much longer here.

“excellent objects but not well curated”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

The museum has excellent collections of Hawaiian and Pacific Islander objects and artifacts. The spaces are also very interestingly appointed from the original buildings. Unfortunately, the "order of visit" and the signage on the displays is not fully informative. If you go without a guide, you would probably not get much from the displays. There is not a very clear order, so you don't know exactly where to start. Each display uses local language--which should be great to give meaning and depth, and help visitors absorb more of this fascinating culture--but usually without a translation or even enough context to guess the meaning.

“Wonderful little museum”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

We were surprised that this museum offered free tour guides on many subjects. The main building houses artifacts and displays illustrating the history of the HI Islands. It also includes a planetarium.
