They have a great Asian art collection (the Indian, Islamic & Buddhist art areas were my favorite). And the temporary shows were quite awesome, they had a display on the art of tattoo.

The museum is located very close to downtown Honolulu right off of Beretania St. It is easy to access via the Honolulu Bus.

There is a very nice gift shop & cafe on site.

The Asian art collection is superb, but there are always interesting shows in the most charming of local architectural buildings. Open air lunch is limited but pleasant, if too short! Volunteers are always cheerful and greet guests with Aloha.

Earlier this year I finally discovered the Honolulu Museum of Art. The museum comprises a number of builidings and quiet courtyards. See Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings from her 1939 visit to the Islands. Awesome gallery of Impressionist paintings. Enjoy a lovely lunch at the Cafe. The iced tea is tops. Reservations for lunch are recommended. The museum also offers limited tours to Doris Duke's Shangri La home near Diamond Head. Advance reservations are required.

There was an exhibit on tattoos and that was quite fascinating. The museum has a great feature on Asian art and very enlightening.

After my friend was done at work here in busy downtown, she took us to look at the latest collection of pieces here. She is an art lover. She works in a gallery here in Honolulu. After we perused the academy we enjoyed a picnic at the park across the street. Nice winding down!
