I'm a local girl, born and raised in Hawaii. I know the island pretty well and have a lot of visitors from the mainland. The Modern is my go to hotel that I recommend to them. It has such a great feel, fun nightlife, fantastic location, amazing views, and the best parties!! One of my favorite things to do is do happy hour at the pool deck, listen to live music, enjoy great cocktails and pupus. The Modern is fantastic for private events as well! I highly recommend this hotel.

After 12 years of visiting Honolulu, finally they have the right hotel for Californians.......not to say it is not right for the rest of the world......"
Nowadays all hotel companies are trying to create that happening atmosphere..... Maybe they should visit the modern honolulu and learn a few tricks. Great service, in a trendy luxury hotel. Did I mention it is not scripted......it is genuine and sincere.

Our travel agent told us to try this recently renovated hotel located at the airport end of the Waikiki strip. About 10 minutes walk from the Ala Moana mall, the hotel is located next to a marina and shares a beach with two other hotels. This is a cool joint. Furniture that screams Beach Boys, a shop that sells the most eclectic holiday items (eg ukeleles) and two beautiful pools - one reserved for adults.

We had a great dinner on the pool deck late one evening and a beautifully presented and delicious in-room breakfast.

Our stay was all too short so another trip is in the planning.

Stayed 2/13/14-2/17/14

This was our first time to HI and loved it with a large part of that being due to our hotel. Since we went in February, and that being the wettest month, we didn't see much sunshine during our trip and if not for the staff and amenities at the Modern it would have been a drab first visit. We went as a couple and both work in the service industry, so we pay

Staff: Awesome. From the moment you arrive you are greeted with scented hand towels and a refreshing drink while you wait to check in. Everyone is friendly, with the exception of one pool attendant who was not overly attentive when you walk in although I'm sure that is due to his position not being tip related. We went as a couple and both work in the service industry, so we pay close attention to service details like answering the phone with "Hello Mr....or Mrs...." and quick room service at any hour. I will state that we do always tip everyone, but nothing extravagant $2 dollars here and $3 there, but it always goes a long way and no one EVER expected tips.

Side note: CONCIERGE was amazing! We came the day before V day with out a restaurant booked for the next day, she called 20+ hotels for us and got us exactly what we wanted. The next day they booked our rental car after calling around for the best prices, called around for paralleling and always had great tips for what to do and on what days to do it.

Rooms: Very modern, which we like, everything is all white and crisp. I personally loved that there is two complimentary waters when you walk in, and they are replaced every evening with the turn down service as well as small card with tomorrows forecast. Everything was clean, room service came every morning and replaced towels etc. We requested a coffee machine which was a nice surprise when we were given keurig, plenty of K cups including Hot coco. Beds are good not great, but the pillows were great, they give you plenty of blankets and even a throw. The AC works perfect and our room was always comfortable with no complaints.

Pool: They offer two pools which they titled Sunrise and Sunset, Sunrise being the larger of the two. There is plenty of seating and extremely friendly waitresses. The drinks are a bit pricey but what isn't in Waikiki? The drinks are tasty and the food was good, not fabulous but very good. Another plus, hardly any children, since we were on a couples vacay this was a huge plus for us. There is also a walking bridge that takes you over to the beginning of the Waikiki Beach.

Location: Yes its not located directly in the heart of the Waikiki beach, but the walk is maybe 5-10 mins on the beach. We found it much nicer to be able to walk the 10 mins then be in the center of the tourist area, which is very commercialized and crowded, and to be able to come back to a quite portion of the beach and hotel. BIG BONUS is also that across the street is where the Friday 7:45 fireworks are set off, talk about perfect view.

Side Note: There is a very trendy lounge located in the lobby called "The Study" which is located behind a rotating bookcase. During the week it was nice to have a drink and listen to some live music, the two women that sing on thursday are amazing and fun. But it does get very busy on Friday and Saturday as a pregame area for club goers and no live music. There is also "Addiction" the nightclub open next door if you want to experience some local nightlife...we didn't so we have nothing to review on that.

TIPS: Great for couples but not a family location, there is a busy lounge downstairs and a nightclub next door. Also, be aware of what your ordering in The Study and check if gratuity is included.

CONS:
$28 dollars a night for parking, but is expected for the area.
If you are on a lower floor, which we were not, but I can understand how it could be loud with the night club and busy city.

Room tip: We stayed in 1127, which is considered partial ocean view, we had a GREAT view of the ocean as well as at night when the beach is dark we could look at the city which was just as pretty

Aloha Crystal F!

Thank you for such an amazing review! So comprehensive and detailed which makes me proud that you enjoyed all elements of your recent stay with us. I did note all of the "buts" and will further review with our teams to increase satisfaction moving forward. We have recently implemented some additions in turndown and service and I am glad they've made a positive impact on your stay and truly was a surprise in itself. As we are always wanting to be cutting edge and MODERN, being practical is still in the forefront and ensuring guests are indeed still being served as they want. Thank you again for the kind words and we hope to see you and yours soon! best regards, Ricardo

The hotel itself is as beautiful as pictured. All the staff we encountered were fantastic! Everyone was really friendly and seemed interested in helping. And hats off to the guys working the valet. I was a little concerned when I initially learned that parking was valet only because I didn't want to have to wait around every single time we went in and out of the property but we never waited more than 2 minutes for our car for the entire 4 night stay even with full occupancy at the hotel. It was nice to also have a nightclub and lounge attached to the hotel for those who enjoy a little bit of nightlight in Hawaii. Entrance to the club was quick and free for hotel guests even though there were long lines (30-50 ppl) out the door.

There were a few shortcomings, mainly with the rooms and their views. This is a small boutique hotel with old elevators. The first night we were "upgraded to a suite" from our ocean view king room. This suite ended up being on the 4 floor and the only view we had was of the tops of the palm trees outside the window and of the hotel across from ours. The headboard also happened to be up against the same wall shared by the elevator shaft. I did not sleep the first night and called the front desk to request a room change first thing in the morning which they accommodated. We ended up on a higher floor, 2 rooms from the elevators. We could still hear the noise but Our "oceanview" was really a partial ocean view. Because of the layout of the hotel, the only REAL oceanview rooms are the ones they call "ocean front."

I would stay here again but would make sure I don't have a room that shares a wall with the elevators. I also probably would not spend extra on this "oceanview" room again. Either spring for ocean front if it's important to you or don't bother with any other upgrades.

Room tip: Their oceanview rooms are really only partial views from the balcony.
