“What boutique is all about”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

Even before we arrived, I was greeted via email by the concierge/mgr asking what time they could expect us to check in.

Upon arrival we were greeted at the front desk with cool refreshing mocktail, and were upgraded to a one bedroom ocean view room (from ocean view room) because I mentioned we were celebrating our anniversary.

The room was clean, pretty, and indeed modern. the shampoos/soap and amenities in the bathroom were so lux! The only inconvenience was the lack of coffee machine in the room. But thats no issue, because every morning from 5:30 -10am there is coffee/tea available with take away coffee cups on the ground floor.

The location of the hotel was also great! short walk to Waikiki beach, AND couple of blocks away from Ala Moana mall made it super convenient to get to places.

Tour/activities desk was helpful when i tried to organise my trip to Pearl Harbor. The free in room wifi also helped me plan for our day trip.

Nearby to the hotel, there is a place called Goofy Cafe that serves dishes from local Hawaiian produce. Or if you are on budget or hankering for junk, McDonald's is just across the street as well.

Overall, great location, great facilities, great service at the Modern!

Room Tip: Ocean facing rooms

I stayed at the Modern for 5 nights and I don't understand the hype about it. For sure the bar is great and the lobby is decorated in a very stylish manner. You'll also get complimentary entrance to the Addiction Nightclub. But the rooms are just average, the pools are very small and the location isn't that great. For me it was just an average experience staying there.

1. Warm, friendly, helpful staff at each department - from valet to reception to concierge.
2. Smart contemporary decor with great practical facilities both in the room and in the public area.
3. Great Japanese restaurant with excellent food and service.
4. Great bar on the ground floor with a warm and friendly mixologist who does fantastic cocktails.
5. Concierge who know precisely what to recommend by asking the right questions - especially to guests like us who have never been to Oahu.

Stayed at the Modern for one night but I wish I could have stayed longer. Definitely more for couples but families are welcome too! Very helpful staff, beautiful rooms and lovely lobby and pool area. Nice quite area of Waikiki without all the crazy hustle but still close to all the beaches, restaurants, and shopping. Will definitely stay again!!

Room Tip: looking down at the pool is pretty cool.

I have just spent 10 days at this hotel and stayed here after reading reviews on Tripadvisor.
On arrival our room was ready.but it was after 12noon as we had transferred from another Hotel.
The room was a good size, very fresh and clean on the 11th Floor with a lovely view over the Harbour and ocean. It is about 5 min walk to the beach but if you go out the back entrance there is a walk way there to the path that takes you around the lagoon and the best place to swim is in front of the Hilton Village, but why would you bother as the pool here is great and well looked after by the pool staff and in the mornings by the wonderful Justin who works is butt off and nothing is too much trouble.for him and a great sense of humor. He is a great asset to the Hotel. The adult pool is a bit of a disappointment as it is very shallow and have floating sunbeds for sun baking. We did have a problem with service of our breakfast on the second day and after speaking to the Manager of food and beverage Timothy who was great and very friendly and the lovely Patience who is in charge of Guest Relations,we were credited with $50 to our account as our breakfast was included in our package.
Patience also went out of her way to help us with an exchange from the Outlets which she didn't have to do. She is a great asset for the Hotel nothing is too much trouble for her. It is very important to report any problems you have as the Hotel need to know so they can fix them to make your stay and better service for future guests. The two things that could be improved would be to have keyed lift service as it is very easy to for anyone to get into the lifts as you don't have to go through the main entrance. Also was very surprised that people can come into the pool area and use the facilities and be served using their credit card. This happened twice next to us, the server knew they were not staying at the Hotel and feel it is not fair to those that are paying to stay there. Over all we would stay here again as staff are very friendly and a short walk to Al Mona shopping center which was great and plenty of eateries there as well. This is the first time we have stayed near the harbour and found it very peaceful. A big thank you to Ruth who was our server at breakfast for the 10 days we there, she went out of her way to give us great service What a lovely girl!! It wasn't her fault with the problem we had at breakfast.

Room Tip: All rooms have a great out look even those that have a street view. If not happy always go back to r...

My WIFE and I were IMPRESSED by the friendly staff .the hotel is well located a 15 minute walk to WAIKIKI and having all the local buses stopping 50 METERS from the front door.our room was fairly spacious with a great bathroom..Our room had a good view of yachts moored nearby and we could see the hills in the distance. .I was generally impressed by the service from all of the staff there. Perhaps the only criticism i would have is the bar fridge was to small and a bit warm if you like to have a few beers on hand. There was a few nice restaurants nearby as well as a convenience store across the road.

The Modern Honolulu is a perfect example how a contemporary hotel should be. The hotel is beautifully made, designed and planed. It is a true masterpiece. Everything in there is in style, even the staffs white-grey clothing combination fits perfectly to the ambient. The rooms are bright and fresh, they smell so good. Personally I even prefer its location, which is not in the centre of Waikiki, but still in walking distance. If you chose to walk into opposite direction, the Ala Moana park and shopping mall are five minutes walk away. Besides that you have a really nice view over marina.
This is definitely the hotel that is raising high above the Waikiki standards. Some hotels there are already worn out. But The Modern Honolulu is Waikiki's young blood. For us there is no alternative to it ... Congratulations for a beautiful job. Just keep shining ...

Room Tip: We had a room facing Hobron Ln. It was not noisy at all and we even had a ocean view from the balcon...
