Room was an ocean view on the 22nd floor overlooking the courtyard and marina. View was awesome, king size bed and pillows were extremely comfortable. Room was well equipped with the essentials. Too busy doing tours and touristy trips to thoroughly enjoy the hotel and all its amenities. Had great stores in the lobby for anything needed. Enjoyed dinner and music at the bar and grill in the courtyard. Great location and value!

We (two people) have stayed a total of ~ 3.5 months at the Ilikai on 4 separate occasions. 6 weeks were in the Hotel and 2 months in the owned condos. There are also timeshares (Shell Vacations) operating out of the Ilikai but we did not stay in a timeshare.

Pros -
1. The Ilikia is located at the west end of Waikiki Beach and is much quieter than the areas around the major hotels east of Lewers Street (if quiet is what you want – it’s a con if it’s not.) You have the beach in front of the Hilton Hawaiian as well. The entire area is not nearly as busy as the east portion of Waikiki.
2. You are close to the Ala Moana Mall and the Magic Island Lagoon (in Ala Moana Park) which is the easiest, safest and best swimming beach we have found on the entire island (although Hanauma Bay is pretty nice.) The above two reasons are why we came back four times.
3. A number of reviews commented that the Wi-Fi was very slow but Oceanic Time Warner just did an upgrade of every single room in the building so it works very well now.
4. The Ilikai is built with 3 wings regardless of whether it is the hotel, owned condos or timeshares; the Diamond Head, Ewa and Makai. For Diamond Head and Ewa, try to stay in units ending in even numbers so that you face the water. If you are in an odd numbered unit, you will be in a "city lights" room meaning you face Ala Moana Blvd and it is a busy street. Also, if you like to sleep with your windows open, the rooms in the "Diamond Head" wing (room numbers ending in 12 up to 26) are noisier as trucks unload their wares early in the morning. Rooms ending in 02 up to 10 are in the Ewa wing and are quieter. Diamond Head rooms are better for watching the many fireworks displays and the Ewa wing is better for sunsets. Overall, Ewa is preferred as long as it is on the water side and you’re staying for any length of time. We were recently in unit 1718 and our friends were in 1608 and 1608 was quite a bit quieter. We have not stayed in the Makai wing (which runs to the water) so both odd and even-numbered rooms have water views. But the Makai rooms ending in odd numbers face the area with the trucks so they likely would be noisier than the even numbered rooms. At least none of the Makai rooms face Ala Moana Blvd.
5. The manager of the hotel invited us to a cocktail party the second time we stayed here which was very courteous of him. We were planning a third visit in the hotel however we wanted to stay a month and owned condo units are less expensive than the hotel for a month so we booked into an owned unit instead.

Cons -
1. The Ilikia just celebrated its 50th anniversary and the hotel shows it. While all suites on the 23rd and 24th floors were either recently renovated or were in the process of being updated, the building overall has a long way to go. For example, the plumbing is old meaning the water is not great so you will need bottled water for your morning coffee and drinking water. The bathrooms are very dated and need a complete overhaul as does the carpeting. The six weeks we stayed in the hotel (2 couples) were in a 2 bedroom unit with a bar fridge and cook top stove so you always go out for meals. The refrigerators and stoves may have been improved when the renovations were completed on the 23rd and 24th floors but I am not sure so I would ask if you plan to stay in one. The owned condos have full refrigerators and a full oven. Also, the 2 bedroom is really a 1 bedroom plus a separate area enclosed by a couple of sliding doors for the other couple.
2. The owned condos are advertised as being fully equipped but that is a stretch. You should bring your own cooking knives (a knife sharpener is provided but does not help with serrated edge knives), wine glasses, drinking glasses and salad bowls. Also bring your own tea pot if you drink same. The knives, forks, spoons, plates and bowls are minimally adequate for two. You will have to shop at Foodland or Don Quijote (they spell the name Quijote rather than Quixote) shortly upon your arrival for necessities so check-in to your unit first to see what is needed. Our friends who stayed in 1608 had a better outfitted unit from ours so the units vary. The condos are all studios (which is noted on the booking website) so they really are suited for 2 people even though it says 3 on the website.
3. If you have significant problems with an owned condo, you may find that issues are not resolved in a timely manner. Our unit had a defective (i.e. loud) motor in the air conditioner which we brought to the attention of Bert, the on-site representative. Bert identified the problem as a motor as did the A/C tech but it was not fixed during the last two weeks that we brought this to Bert’s attention. (Also our fault as we should have brought this to Bert’s attention when we first got there; initially we slept without A/C and did not know the motor was defective. Once the humidity spiked up we used A/C and we immediately heard the noise. We should have turned it on upon arrival.) I spoke with Bert just before we left and he had no idea when or if it will be repaired. We think it possible that the previous renter had the same problem as the motor was noisy as soon as we turned it on so the issue must have existed for some time. If you are used to things being repaired quickly, you may be sadly disappointed but it is Hawaii and things are a bit more relaxed.
4. The owned condos appeal to seniors who are in Hawaii for roughly one to three months. The pool is regularly used by many of these seniors and you will see the same people at the pool (good if you like meeting up with friends and bad if you want a place for your kids to swim.) Generally, the Ilikai appeals to older people given its quiet location so if you have a couple of young children, this is probably not the place to go.

Hawaii is expensive because there is more demand for rooms than there is supply. Consequently, many Waikiki hotels charge higher prices compared to the mainland and this is true of the Ilikai. If you really like Waikiki and want to be there for a long stay, the condos are less expensive and quieter than many hotels in Waikiki but the rooms have issues. I don’t think I recommend it for families with young children for a shorter stay. While more expensive, each building in the Hilton Hawaiian has its own pool so it is much better for children than the Ilikai.

Upon arrival we were greeted and helped with our luggage, check in was quick and easy.
The staff at the Ilikai are pleasant and helpful.
The location is perfect, each side of the hotel has the best beaches for swimming.
We had a one bedroom with a kitchen with a view of the marina and ocean.
We will be going back there again, had a great stay.

When we first arrived we were greeted by every hotel employee we passed. As we checked in we were given an upgraded, which I thought was amazing. Our room gave us a view of the beautiful mountains and was very spacious, clean, and cozy. Yes, the hotel may be a little old, however it is still well maintained and filled with helpful and courtesy employees. We will definitely be staying here again in the near future.

Firstly I feel that I could not say that this is a 4 star hotel. I would give it a 3- 3 1/2.
Our first impressions were great as we arrived very early and were greeted by a lovely front office staff member who advised us our room was available. After a very long flight with little sleep we appreciated this very much.
There were 3 ladies sharing a room for 7 days and we found the room big enough to accommodate us even with a trundle in it. The balcony was quite big but unfortunately we had only 2 chairs on it.
Housekeeping was very hit and miss and every day we had no extra toilet paper provided. With 3 ladies...... Say no more!! We pulled up our beds each day and no attempt was made to make them properly unless we left them fully unmade. We had no extra toiletries in the bathroom till day 4. We booked a room with a kitchenette and we had a coffee machine but no kettle or salt and peppers provided. Just the basics.
The beach is a short walk and the lagoon is just next door which was great as the pool is far too small for a hotel this size and we could never get a lounge chair.
Overall we had a great time and we would return to the Ilikai fully aware that by our standards it is not a 4 star hotel.

We've stayed in the hotel before but this was definitely our last visit. Love the location, the history and views. However.... if you like to swim and expect to find a seat at the pool together (2) almost any time of day this isn't the hotel for you. We ended up sharing a chase, briefly, and only once in the entire week we were there. And don't expect to avoid the crowds by swimming the evening because the pool gate is locked! No food or beverages are allowed in the pool area and was surprised to learn that it was a chlorine. What is Hawaii without memories of some relaxing downtime at the pool. We really missed that. Very disappointing. I wish I'd seen a review like this on Trip Advisor.

Some of the staff was very friendly but somewhat spotty at the front desk. The rooms are large, basic and clean but this hotel is tired and the rooms are in need of renovating. The veneer on the bottom of our bathroom door had been peeling off for some time, had been painted over and was still peeling. If you want to print out your boarding pass you'll be directed to a rolling cart in a small corner with an ancient computer beside the front desk. Although this hotel still beautiful in many ways this is not the Illikai we remember.

Room Tip: Do not recommend this hotel.

Aloha,
Was sorry to hear of your pool experience with lack of available chairs and you will be pleased to know that a second pool area with loungers and seating areas is planned and should be completedwithin a year. All commercial pools are closed in the evening for liability purposes, but you can always enjoy the nearby saltwater lagoon located nearby. Food and beverage is not allowed in the pool area as it is serviced by the restaurant who provide these items. You will be pleased to know that the hotel is currently renovating its entire inventory and will completed by October.
