We booked this tour in advance and it was great. The history of the house and Doris Duke was informative and we loved the house and art. It was similar to a tour we did recently of Villa Tugendat in Brno (Czech republic) and the houses had some similarities.
We stayed after the tour at the museum for lunch, and saw some other museum exhibits which are included in your ticket price.

We very much enjoyed our visit to this house. It is arranged through the Honolulu Museum. We had booked our tickets in advance. Essentially, you go to the museum where you see a short film and then are taken by minibus to the house. It is there that you meet your guide. We had an excellent guide and greatly enjoyed our tour of the house and the gardens. It is a fascinating view round the house and we heard both about Doris Duke and the way in which the house was decorated with Islamic Art. However, there is much more to it than just the collection and the way in which the items are placed there. It is a house and not a museum which is rather welcoming.
It is a nice little touch that you are given a paddle fan when you are going round the house (it can be warm) and it is a gift to you at the end of the tour. The views of the ocean from the dining room terrace are exceptional and in fact, all the views from the house and its history are exceptional and very interesting.

After the tour you are returned to the museum where you can visit the gift shop and there is also a cafe. We were very impressed by the organisation and the tour itself. It is well worth a visit.

TIP: Make sure you book your tickets over the Internet well in advance to avoid disappointment.

A fun visit from the nice Honolulu Museum of Art. Doris Duke built a hideaway the other side of Diamond Head and she created a fantastic home with beautiful rooms decorated with middle eastern art. Our guide was great and the place is worth a visit.

Be prepared to stand still for extended lengths of time. tour meets in the courtyard which has seating for only 4 people, then progresses to a video with no seating (the limited seating was already occupied by museum visitors), then stand around another 10 minutes while late arrivals are accomodated and sent to the video. Arrive onsite and stand around outside in the sun for 20 minutes - could be less depending on which tour group you are assigned to. I can walk and climb stairs but standing still in one place is very tedious! The guide was very knowledgeable and as others have mentioned it is very hot inside the house. The location is spectacular and the islamic art is very interesting. However, there is no time to just be in a room and really view all that is on display.

Step into the pages of Architectural Digest! The tour of Doris Duke's home and museum of Islamic art run in conjunction with the Honolulu Museum of Art was absolutely amazing.

Our docent Stacy was incredibly knowledgeable, yet very approachable with questions, and made Doris Duke and her passion for the objects incorporated into her home come alive.

I would say that this was one of the best guided tours that I've ever been part of. I know that it's the only tour to have held my attention from start to finish. Very much recommended.
