Owner description: Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

“Fantastic paved hike!”
Reviewed 12 January 2014

We had a great time going up to the lighthouse, the trail is paved most of the way, and the views are fantastic. Be warned parking is limited though, and our 5 year old was exhausted before the walk back down, as the trail can get a little steep. Loved viewing the whales in the water at the base though. Beautiful sights and pictures to be taken along the way. There are no vendors, or bathrooms at the site, so plan accordingly!!!

“Easy hike with a chance to see whales”
Reviewed 10 January 2014

Usually do this hike every time we have visitors. It is an easy hike, great to take a few pictures and on a clear day you can see our neighbor islands. If you are adventurous, take the dirt path at the lookout, there is a telescope is, and hike down to the sea. You will find a set of tide pools to explore. If you have your bathing suite on enjoy a dip in the pools the water is bath water temperature. Enjoy

“Expect a sweaty hike - it's worth the effort.”
Reviewed 8 January 2014

While you don't actually get near the lighthouse, there's more to enjoy about this 1.5 mile hike (uphill all the way until you turn back) anyhow. Super view of the crater, some of the most amazing blue water I saw in Oahu, and if you're lucky some whales playing far off in the distance.

It's a paved road, but not easy. Trek light and lather on the sunscreen. Lots of families and people on the path so parking looked tough (we had scooters so it wasn't too challenging to squeeze in.)

“Great view!”
Reviewed 7 January 2014

Paved trail that runs along the ocean, steep in places. More adventurous hikers left the trail to go down to the ocean and swim in the tidal pools. A must see. The lighthouse is classic, colorful and a great photo op.
