Owner description: Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

We have done this twice, the last time it was afternoon and too hot, but still such a great view, it was worth it. Plan to hike down to the Dragon's Nostrils from where you see the Whale Display Sign. Hike down a windy rocky trail to where there are 7 blowholes and spend some time there. when I was there last only one was spouting and it was too hot so I didn't wait around. So go early and stay longer!

Although the entire path is paved, it's still a somewhat challenging walk, due to length and elevation, so I wouldn't recommend doing it in the height of the afternoon on a hot sunny day, but the views are more than worth the hike. Great for photos!

Parking was problematic, but other than that, everything was perfect.

Bring water, camera and sunscreen.

Great time!!

You can also reach the Makapuu Lighthouse by public bus. The path to the lighthouse is paved and it is a rather easy walk to the top. The views are beautiful and you can watch people paraglide off a nearby mountain. Don't miss this experience!

While visiting Chief's Luau for their luau, I noticed the lighthouse light beaming through the trees. The next day we drove up to the site where the lighthouse is. We didn't take a hike to it, but just seeing it there made me feel like I was back home in North Carolina at the beach. It's tucked away on the backside, so don't give up on finding it.
