Owner description: Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

This is about as short and simple a hike as you can get on Oahu. It's great for beginners, and you can complete the hike in an hour. I threw my back out 3 days before doing this hike, and it was still doable.

The views at the top are great, and it's definitely kid friendly.

We drove around O'ahu East side to find a great hiking experience for the day that was walk friendly for our 8 year old neice as well. We chose Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail which is paved and has a pretty wide path. The view along the way was beautiful but the final top view looking over the lighthouse cliffs, or Makapu'u Beach, Rabbit Island or a birds eye view of either Sea life park or the old harbor set of Magnum PI in the distance was well worth the uphill walk and with some awesome picture opportunities. We also got to enjow some wind gliders circling above with a quick "shaka". There is an opportunity to hike down to the Makapu'u tidepools, which should be done by more experience hikers or locals who knows the place well for it is a steep rock and dirt single trail down. But you may view the tidepools from the scenic point above. It's Free, with free parking so a must do when on O'ahu!

The walk to the lighthouse is beautiful, and if it's during season you'll see whales in the distance. A couple things to remember. Bring water. It's a long walk and is quite strenuous, especially going up. There's no water anywhere on the trail. Also if during peak time of the day, you may end up having to park on the road a little ways away from the trail. It's a beautiful walk though, so it's worth it!

I had an ankle op a year ago, but always want to do this walk as getting to the lighthouse and view is worth it. Do the walk early morning or later afternoon.

Makapu'u is one of the coolest hikes I have ever done in my life. The hike is paved and is really easy. The views that you see all direcions along the way are magnificent.
