We'd bought a Groupon $30 for $60 worth of food. We called for a reservation on the same day we planned to go, asking for an early dinner, 5:45pm to ensure we would be able to get in. We were only the 2nd table to be seated that night and the waiters were very attentive. We told them about our Groupon and ordered one sushi izakaya to share. Each dish was delicious and very light on the rice, mostly fish with delicate sauces. When we figured we'd eaten $60 worth, we asked for the check. It turns out we still had enough credit to order one more large, fish-filled roll, which was delicious.
Only one glitch, the computerized cash register was on the blink and it took a long time to get our bill, and they had not defined it as a Groupon or $60 worth of food for $30. If I hadn't caught that mistake, they would have charged us the full $60. I think it was an honest mistake, made while the cashier was distracted trying to fix the register. All was corrected. We would go again, especially with another Groupon.

For weeks we've been trying to make reservations at the restaurant from 10 am in the morning until 8 pm the same day.
When you call the reservation number - the mailbox is full. I left my phone number at 10am. It's now 8pm and no one has called.
I've called 8 times today and the mailbox is still full.
My husband called 2times...no luck... Very frustrating!

In the space formerly occuped by Sushi Ichiban is a delightful new sushi izakaya, Kona Kai. Located in the Kaimuki neighborhood, it stands out as probably the best Japanese resto there. The small dining room is darkish with paintings of fish on the walls. The ambience is meh. There is no hint that the lunch to be served would be so memorable, unless you start to notice that the room is filling up fast. We are here early after hearing good vibes from former patrons. At lunchtime there is usually plenty of metered parking in the adjacent lot.
The lunch menu is basically a choice of 4 entree selections: Two sushi sets, one sashimi set, and one combo prime rib-sushi set. The prices range from $14 to $20, which is higher than most would consider for lunch. The dinner menu is also available; the patrons next to us ordered the no-published-price, say-stop, omakase sets. Tea, miso soup, salad, and a daily special appetizer are included.
I had the sushi set consisting of generous servings of high quality fish and seafood and premium rice. Compared with the sushi I recently ate in Seoul and Taiwan, this selection was better tasting and better prepared.
Because of the many sushi orders, the service can be slow. Each order is prepared by the single sushi chef.
I will be back--but will also tell my relatives and friends.
