This hotel is aproximately 1/2 block from downtown Waikiki. A short 10 minute walk away from the crowds of Waikiki Beach and business district. There is a wonderful aquarium right in between that should be toured by all.
The hotel itself is very nice, the views wonderful. We stayed in a 'partial ocean view' room and had a great view of the ocean as well as downtown.
The staff was very attentive and catered to our needs immediately. There are parking fees, we parked at the park next door free of charge and it was a safe place to leave the car.
All in all, a great place to stay if you don't want to be in the busy area.

We stayed at the New Otani for six nights in the middle of November of 2010. It is a medium-sized hotel RIGHT ON San Souci Beach, a 15 minute walk from the central Waikiki Strip. The decor is old-fashioned, but delightfully so. There is a small fish pond in the front, and the elevator looks like an elevator should look in a classy beachside hotel from the 70s. As with the rest of Hawaii, there are a lot of "open-air" spaces incorporated into the architecture. There is a fish pond at the front of the hotel, and a convenience store, as well as a few shops. This is useful because the nearest ABC (convenience store found ALL OVER Waikiki) is a ten minute walk away, through a large park. The quality of the room depends on which one you get, although there is a lanai (balcony) in every room. Some of the rooms are quite small and have a view of... their parking lot, or the hotel next to it. But if you are lucky, there are also some beautiful rooms and suites overlooking diamond head, or the ocean. We were in a Jr Suite where EVERY ceiling-to-floor window faced the ocean. It was stunning. There is complete and easy access to San Souci beach, and the concierge will even assign free towels and beach mats for hotel guests. The restaurants in the hotel were fancy and this was reflected in their pricing. The staff were friendly and helpful, and we were very pleased with our stay and were sad to leave.

We would definitely go back.

The service was wonderful and the location overlooking all of Waikiki, the park and Diamond head were beautiful particularly at sunset. Breakfast at the Hau Tree on the beach was wonderful. It is a great value. Everone is helpful and the spa, Japanese style ,is very nice.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel because we wanted something close by to Waikiki without actually being on Waikiki. We were upgraded to an ocean view room for free which surprisingly, had a view of the ocean. The room was very clean and very quiet, and although it looked like it had been updated recently you could still tell in spots that it was an older hotel. I loved that it was right on the beach (no crossing the street for us!) and the beach was a little protected so we could snorkel and not worry about big waves and surfers. The only downside was that to get to Waikiki, you have to walk past a park which while beautiful in the day, is home to a few homeless and can make for some uncomfortable walks at night. But really, that was the only downside. If you're looking for a good value right on the beach with a bit slower pace than Waikiki, this is probably a good bet for you.

We booked a moderate room for one night. The room itself was small, very old, and the bedding wasn't the greatest (pillows were lumpy)--and it really didn't look as nice as the one they have in their picutre. Our room was one of those rooms that could adjoin to the next room to form a 2 bedroom suite. It was fine until the next room occupants came home and then we could hear everything including them using the restroom. At 9pm we asked if we could have another room. They gave us another room but our new room had a broken air conditioner (hot!) and the shower kept going from cold to hot.

I ordered a small salad snack from room service. It took over 45 mins to get my salad delivered to my room (a salad!!??). The next morning when we went to make reservations at the Hau Tree Lani (great restaurant by the way) they told us they couldn’t fit us in for 2 hours but they ‘squeezed’ us in. Then when we went to the restaurant, they weren’t busy at all. Weird!

In summary, the customer service was good (they did give us another room) but the rooms were crap and outdated. The room service was slow and I don’t even know what to think about the restaurant reservation issue. We won’t stay there again (we’ll spend the extra $30 and stay at the Lotus hotel next door)

What we liked :
- the hotel was clean, the furniture was modern
- the place was very calm, wich is very nice after spending an afternoon in Waikiki
- the beach was uncrowded
- the Hau Tree Lanai, were breakfast are taken, is really great
- the service was nice and the cocktails were great
- the view from our bed (palmtrees and the mountains)
- the walk to Waikiki, through parks, is very nice

What we didn't like :
- the view from our lanai (rooftops and the parking lot)
- the bedroom could use a refreshment (wallpaper, bathroom)
- the AC : quite noisy
- no bottle of water in the room
- the price ;)

It was exactly what we were looking for to visit Honolulu. And the Hau Tree Lanai is an incredible place to have breakfast !

I was very hesitant on writing a review, as I like to keep these gems to myself to avoid overcrowdedness. But if it wasn't for someone else writing a review, I would never have stayed there.
I could not ask for a better location. More quiet beach yet still walkable to waiki if need be.
The breakfasts are fantastic - it kept us full untill dinner time. The staff all around were great, the room was clean and the view spectacular!
It was probably the first time me and my spouse have ever had consitent nights of good, deep sleep. A combination of the matress, pillow, ocean sounds and the animal sounds from the zoo!
We long to go back!
