“Cute place but could use a clean...”
Reviewed 20 February 2010

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for two days in February. We had read the mixed reviews on trip advisor, but decided to give it a try. The price was great, $80/night, plus an additional $20 for parking. Our 'superior' room was small, but the furnishings were nice, we had a good view of the canal and the city from our balcony, and there was a handy fridge and microwave in the room. The location was also good, near all of the action in Waikiki. We also enjoyed the free breakfast every day.

My biggest issue with the hotel was the cleanliness of the room. The floor clearly hadn't been mopped in a while. There was a lot of dust around. The bathroom walls and door were dirty. The hotel would have been so much better had the room been properly cleaned.

We also ended up moving to a much nicer hotel which was only $30 more per night.

My husband and I were extremely disappointed with our overall experience. As soon as we arrived, there was no one to greet us and we had to carry our own luggage up to the lobby. Even though we stood there looking lost, no one approached us or told us where to go. When we went to the receptionist, even they ignored us and it took us a couple of times to get their attention. Finally, when we had one receptionist's attention, he was extremely curt and rude. We thought Hawaii was supposed to be home to friendly people and offer exceptional service, boy were we wrong. My husband and I have traveled to many countries and stayed in MANY hotels; out of all the places we've stayed at, this was the worst place. The room was tiny and not worth what we paid for. (you also have to pay $20 for parking). We were so turned off by the service we checked out the next day and moved hotels. It was THAT bad. Moving hotels was the best decision we'd ever made. We moved to a hotel only $30 dollars more expensive which turned out to be a 5star hotel - let me tell you, it was a completely different experience. For only $30 more, we received exceptional service and our hotel room was huge, clean, comfortable. It was such a stark difference from Aqua Aloha Surf & Spa.

I honestly cannot get over how disappointed I was with the service at Aqua Aloha. 2 receptionists we interacted with were horrible. These 2 individuals should not be serving guests. When we spoke to the manager (through the phone, because he wasn't coming in until the afternoon), even HE gave us attitude! What type of hotel are you running if even the hotel manager has attitude?!

I do NOT recommend this place. There are TONS of other hotels in Waikiki where you can get a better deal and MUCH better service.

Aloha GBVC!

We appreciate your comments regarding the service on property and sincerly apologize for what you encountered. It is not our intent to ignore guests nor provide the type of 'attitude' you mention. We will work to rectify these concerns immediately.

At the same time we still view the Aloha Surf & Spa as an incredible value for guests. The service on property is usually very good and the product is exceptional in comparison to the price. The built in FREE amenities such as an upgraded continental breakfast, internet access, local & 1800 calls, and safe use - to just name a few, offer true savings for guests. There are no comparable properties that offer a better value as you mention, in fact you paid $30 additional per night at another location. Once expenses are added on, that can quickly add up. We do not 'nickel & dime' guests in a time where other hotels require resort fees, and incidental charges.

However, we realize that service is paramount and we would like to make this right. Please don't hesitate to contact us directly so that we might have the opportunity of better hosting you again in the future.

Mahalo,

I have stayed here twice. Both times, the hotel was fully booked. The first time, I stayed with family and we rented out two suites on the top floor, fl 16. Excellent stay that time. Breakfast was good and we had a great vacation. I came back a year later with friends and we stayed in a cheaper room. I got an upgrade for coming back but we stayed on the 6th floor. This was not great since we got a smaller room, even with the upgrade but hey, we didn't complain because of the deal we were getting. What were the 2 things that prevent me from giving this place the same review as the first was that the breakfast seemed to go down in quality. Not a huge deal but I just remember more fruit and more juices the first time. The second, and bigger issue was that our room was next to the parking lot of the grocery store next door. There is an enormous banyan tree in that lot which has been around forever. If you're staying on the lower floors, you'll find that as soon as the sun is about to rise, those birds start chirping like nuts. Yeah, this is Hawaii and birds are everywhere but it's like that tree is the local Denny's or something. They're all chirping up a storm. For someone who likes to sleep til 8am or 9am, their chirping at 5am caused a problem. I asked to change rooms but the hotel was full so I used earplugs but I could still hear them... If you're a light sleeper, just pay the extra for a higher floor or a room on the side farthest from that tree. But still, it was a good stay for the price.

We stayed for our honeymoon. The staffs are very friendly & nice. Customer service is great.
Excellent Location which is only few blocks away from Waikiki beach, international market, and all the shops, restaurants, etc. You do not need a rental car if you plan to stay around Waikiki. Even the zoo and aquarium are within walking distance. Free breakfast (we enjoyed every morning) and free high speed internet (we didn't have time to use the internet). If you are planning to go on cruise or Polynesian Cultural Center, the free shuttle pick up location is just around the corner of hotel. The travel agent at hotel is really helpful and some of her price is even cheaper than booking directly.
In the room, there are microwave, refrigerator, plates, forks, etc.
It's nice to keep some ice cream or cold beer in the room or have some late night hot snack.
We are planning to go back and will definitely stay at Aqua Aloha Surf Hotel again. We will recommend the hotel to all our friends as well. Mahalo for wonderful staying experience :)

This hotel is such a great place. Front end staff at the place are always such a good help. They truley do have tha Aloha Spirit. The rooms were well looked after every day and meeting the cleaning staff in the halls was always with a smile. The little walk from the hotel to the beach was always an adventure, great to get out and explore places around Wakiki. "Wipe out" Tuesdays was a great promotion put on by the hotel for gets to meet and mingle in the loby over a few drinks. The bit of noise from garbage removal in the mornings is somthing we learned to tolerate.( It just has to get done.) If i have to one small complaint, it was the continental breakfast.Morning oat meal with no milk to go with it is a bit of a bummer. But you are within walking distance of several great places to go for breakfast at reasonalble prices. I say get out and enjoy all Waikiki has to offer. The Aloha Surf and Spa comes with Two Thumbs Up.

My wife and I spent a couple of weeks on Oahu and the Big Island and this was our first hotel for 2 nights on the Islands. It was a great value and although a little worn, that only enhanced the charm for us. There was no real view but was fairly close to the beach and next to Kuhio Avenue and we enjoy walking around. The staff were great and quite helpful. The hotel even left us 2 small bottles of champagne and a box of macadamia nuts when they noted we were celebrating an anniversary! We were very touched by that and said we'd be sure to leave a positive review on TripAdvisor when we were back. A great place to stay and we'd certainly return.
