“Good, cheap option”
Reviewed 2 April 2014

This is an older hotel, the carpet is faded from the sun and the shower squeaks. But it is clean. This is Hawaii not midwest US, cheap hotels are still trying to do everything to have repeat customers. And how much time are you planning on spending inside while visiting Hawaii anyways? The staff was mostly friendly, they gave plenty of towels, little shampoos and soaps. Most importantly was the mini fridge and microwave that insured you could eat a good deal of meals cheaper by getting supplies across the street at ABC stores. I had to take a star off because of the weird internet situation. I don't need cable TV, I need an easy way to book my activities and my phone was not cutting the mustard. Had to go downstairs and book them in the lobby. Other than that great for a busy people looking for a clean bed and working shower.

Easy walk to beach, restaurants and shopping. And the bus service is frequent and handicapped accessible.

Found the two bedroom / two bath condo on vrbo.com website. The unit was recently remodeled with handsome appliances including dishwasher and a stackable washer / dryer.

With views of Diamond Head and the Pacific, it was a pleasure to have a quick breakfast as the day began.

Our week in the city was a pleasure.

Very clean and secure unit on an upper floor.

We were booked to stay here for the whole time in Hawaii, but as soon as we arrived we realized that staying here for ten days was not what we wanted. We quickly went back to the lobby and left. This hotel is nice from the outside, and is so old and aged, that when we walked into our room, it was so out dated, and dirty. That we couldn't bare to spend one night in the room. Let alone sleep worrying about if their was a fire, we would never get out.

Stayed at the Hawaiian Monarch the first week of March and it was in my opinion just average or slightly below. Room was a little dated and it was very hard to get the hot water to stop going back and forth from hot and cold on a moments notice. If someone could have seen me jumping in and out of the water they would have laughed pretty hard..lol. Hotel has a large pool and sun deck with out door grills for cooking out which are very nice. Lobby is extremely basic for such a large hotel and upon first arrival it is somewhat difficult to locate. Key cards in the elevator are slightly tricky to use as they work best when inserted and pushed to the right. After a few times you'll get the trick :). Hotel is in the corner of Waikiki and as long as you don't mind walking a little you can get pretty much everywhere. Hilton Beach is close and very nice and the fireworks on Friday night are good from here too. Parking, no parking is included with either the hotel or the condos and you will pay $20/night or $180/month. Parking across the street is cheaper at $18, but you can park free on the Ala Wai with the exception of Mon and Fri from 8:30am-11am when they do street sweeping. Views of the Ko'olaus is awesome from the Ala Wai side. Plenty of restaurants to walk to and for breakfast I highly recommend the Wailana Coffee House...the all you can eat pancakes is just $5.95 and includes eggs bacon and toast! You can't touch this in Waikiki! Not my first choice of hotels, but this trip was short notice and this hotel was cheap and served as a nice crash pad for our stay. Enjoy.

Room Tip: Ala Wai side has great views of the Mountains.

Their recommendation was accurate and the price was fair during this busy season..
We would stay again and the Location is excellent.

Located on the main street in 5 min from all shops and ''active life" - not noisy, easy to get to the beach and shops. Poor service: 1) They make the bed, sometimes not every day, and take the garbage out every day. Clean towels every day. 2) there once was a cockroach in my bathroom 3) when I asked to print a ticket on the reception, they said that it's nlot possible and didn't help me to do this in any way. 4) free wi-fi only in the lobby 5) old noisy air conditioner located at the level of the pillow. Noisy elevator! Overall it's a desent hotel for it's prise.

Room Tip: not near the elevator

The hotel shows its age - it is possibly one of the oldest buildings in Waikiki. The rooms need some freshening. The bath tube for instance was not in good condition in our room.
Given that, we had a nice view from the 22nd level, we could see the beach and the ocean.
(in another stay in the same hotel but at the 17th level the view is far from being as nice.)
The free locker room at the reception was a great bonus.
At least the rooms are clean.
Very nice location, around 15 mins to the beach. Bus station 5-10 mins walk from the hotel.
Internet available only in the lobby, not in the rooms. But definitely not in the middle of Waikiki.
Nice swimming pool with a jacuzzi - but closes at 9pm: a bit too early!
Parking is "only" 20 dollars for 24 hours (sadly it is a great deal in Waikiki).
