“Fourth visit to HHV still finding new places to enjoy”
Reviewed 29 January 2014

We have stayed at this hotel four times. The best was this time because we were much more familiar and mobile, no children, and able to walk the distance to Waikiki . This is not insignificant ! However we enjoy different things every time we have been there. It is huge, restaurants are generally good but expensive and sometimes staff have been not so helpful.... But this time except for getting wrong information from the call centre on one occasion, it was great. My key to travel is to ask the same question at least three times ... Even in big hotels !
Thank you HHV we had a lovely 4 nights !

Room Tip: If you can access Al'i tower it is worth the extra ...

My husband and I picked Oahu for our 30th Wedding Anniversary and loved our stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and LOVED Waikiki Beach. The resort is large and the staff was very pleasant and professional but not overly friendly, except for our maid, but that's ok, we weren't looking to make friends with them and appreciated their professionalism. We were upgraded to the Rainbow Tower (7th floor) with a BEAUTIFUL view of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head. Enjoying the wonderful Kona coffee that they provide on our balcony every morning was a fantastic way to start our day. A lot of past reviewer really complained about the price and quality of the food at the resort and it WAS very expensive. If you are creative there are ways around that. There are two ABC stores on the property that sell just about everything. Our room had a small refrigerator that we stocked from the ABC store with greek yogurt, juices, cheese, beer etc. which really helped with the food bill. The pre-made sandwiches also weren't too bad either. There is also a pretty good pizza place in the village that was good and reasonable and a Dairy Queen underneath the Rainbow Tower by the beach that served sandwiches and hot dogs. A Dairy Queen hot dog for $3.50 sure beats the resorts hot dog at $9.50! There is also a very good food truck parked in front of the lagoon by the marina that had excellent food. The resort breakfast buffet was $28.99 per person and didn't look that great but if you walk down the beach towards Diamond Head you'll run into the very famous Duke's which had a delicious breakfast buffet for $16.99 which included all the juice and coffee you wanted - better food and better ambiance.
We loved the location of this hotel. All the fun of Waikiki but at a quieter end of the beach. You can rent beach chairs for $15 a day which is good for all day, save your receipt so if you decide to leave and come back later, they'll get you a new chair. Some people purchased rafts and used those as "beach chairs" on the beach. There is no charge for chairs by the pool but all the beaches are public in Hawaii so you either pay for a chair or bring your own. We also rented a paddle board at the resort for a few hours and had fun trying to master that skill.
We did not rent a car for the week because there are so many things to do with companies that pick you up at the hotel. We booked tours to see Pearl Harbor, snorkeling and hiking up Diamond Head which included transportation in the price. We did rent a car one day from National Car Rental which is right at the resort and they gave us a great rate on a convertible which was a blast driving all around the Island. There is also a boat dock right at the resort that offers various water adventures. We really enjoyed their sunset cruise with snacks and drinks included. The crew was wonderful and had everyone in a great mood by the time we returned to "port"; the resort.
All in all the resort was beautiful, very clean, in a wonderful location and we felt like we were in paradise. Different parts of the resort are undergoing renovation so ask about it at check in. They were working on the murals of the rainbow on both sides of the Rainbow tower while we were there so we couldn't see the rainbows but it was not very noisy. We did hear a lot of noisy construction sounds by the Tappa Tower so ask to be away from the construction. Our flight left late at night on our last day so they gave us late check out and an assigned time to use their courtesy suite to clean up for our long flight home - a very nice touch but make sure you schedule that the day or two before because everyone wants to use it too. We loved the resort and if we return to Oahu again, this is where we will stay again!

Room Tip: Ask to be close to the beach - one of the towers seems almost to be a block away!

We stayed here for just under 2 weeks. Upon arrival, we avoided the crowds in the main tower and checked in directly in the Kalia tower. 2 adjoining rooms (6 people) on the 24 thfloor facing the mountains. Food is pricey on site, but tons of options just minutes away. Lanikai Juice and DQ near the many pools, water slides and beach helped cure the mid day thirst. Kids thoroughly loved the tube slide, stand up paddle board rentals in the lagoon, and the snorkelling. Rented a car two different times to explore the island. Barter the prices and the model of car. On site Luai is a waste of cash. Can watch the show for free just outside the fence and the food was lame. Noticed that many travellers make a stop at Costco before checking in. Very smart. We were constantly at the ABC store buying water and snacks. Lots of people on site, but nothing was over crowded. Thumbs up to the family selling the lighted toys before the outstanding Friday night fireworks! We appreciated the hospitality room at the end of our stay. Everyone rested and showered before getting on a 10 hour flight. Mahalo HHV Waikiki Resort

Room Tip: Less people in Kalia tower, has a small pool for early morning swims and a decent gym. Higher floor...

We stayed in the Ali'i tower which was much less crowded. Check in is a crowded unpleasant experience, even though I researched the resort and thought I knew what to do when we arrived jet lagged finding the place to check in was impossible. I asked for help from staff but was just shoved into a large line and told to wait and check in with everybody else even though I knew we had our own check in to be done at the Ali'i tower. When we finally got to the Ali'i tower and complained we were credited $50 to our account for the bad experience, but I would have rather just not gone through it at all.

This is a huge resort but well planned. Everything was wonderful! My son got married on the beach there so several of us were there for that. We had three rooms at the Hilton and we were all very pleased with everything! The rooms were very comfortable and the Hilton property was magnificent! Beautiful landscaping, waterfalls, fish ponds, etc. everywhere made it perfect!
There are lots of stores and restaurants within walking distance and the beach is, too!

This was my second stay at HHV (as part of the Pacific Telecommunications Council event). Although some reviewers have experienced questionable service levels at the check-in desk, I've had no such issues - things were explained to me and I had most of my questions answered to full satisfaction. Even though I showed up earlier than the check-in time, my wait for a room was bare minimal.

In 2013, I stayed in the Diamond head tower - facing the Tapa Tower; where the bar tends to get a bit fowdy & noisy - thanks to inebriated telecoms executives who insist on singing along with the band most times out of key and out of tune. This time, I had a room within Tapa Tower itself - spectacular view of Waikiki .... not the beach but the concrete jungle but makes a pretty sight in the evenings.

Food options are good on the property and even more options within walking distance and/or by taxi, so no issues here.

As I was in Honolulu for work, I didn't really get an opportunity to take advantage of most of the facilities - both in room (PS3) as well as on the property (tours, surfing lessons, kayaking within the small lagoon, etc)

Room Tip: In January, as far away as possible from Tapa Bar :) if you would like a good night's sleep
