I have very mixed feelings about this place; overall our holiday was wonderful, but there were many things that could have been much better.

My thoughts:

Location: far end of Waikiki, knew that and didn't mind the walk up to town, however friends we were with were disappointed as the best surfing is in the middle of the main strip, surfing at HHV is on a reef break which was not suitable for children or at low tide. Ali'i tower well located.

Service: I emailed the hotel a week before arrival asking some details about restaurant reservations. Were never answered. On those occasions we asked something of staff at reception/concierge/main desk - usually they had no idea (eg. where is lost property, where is the lei making class) and a bit surly. Things like lei making and hula classes barely advertised, but were wonderful. Kids Club cancelled for the afternoon on a day we really wanted it, without notice.

Checkin: Was quick at Ali'i Tower, although on arrival at 0700 told 'I think your room is ready' - certainly should be, since we'd paid for the night before, and also then asked to pay the resort fee, which had been included, but quickly resolved.

Pools: generally very crowded. Need more slides. Slide pool needs to open much later. Towel desk should be staffed much later.

Lagoon: one of the highlights for me - you could do really long laps if you wanted exercise, kids safely learned stand up paddle boarding and kayaking, although all at a price. Can see fish swimming about which makes you think the water is healthy.

Beach: okay directly in front of the Ali'i Tower, very rocky around to the far side.

Food: terrible, except for Benihana. Take out options vile. Only room service option = same as at Pronto Pickle. This is a reason I probably wouldn't come back.

Grounds: beautiful, but so crowded

Kids Club: they loved it (drawing, crafts and trip to the Aquarium, but cancelled with no notice, another day full so if you need it book early.

Outdoor movie: Kids loved it, on the great lawn, we moved a park bench from the road side onto the lawn for more comfort. Got a pizza (okay) across the road to eat.

Lei making and hula class: kids loved it, nice midday time out of the sun

Rooms: (Ali'i Tower) average. Lanai doesn't have a light, so when children are asleep you either have to creep around in the dark, or do as I did - drag the floor lamp out onto the lanai to read.
Our ocean view room also opened onto a side road where there were delivery trucks - I never heard one so it didn't bother me, but other people noticed truck beeps early in the morning.
The AC was freezing, I left it off during the day and only had it on to sleep, didn't seem to be able to adjust it. I was annoyed about the 'free' DVDs, much prefer pay per view movies.

I think families with children will like this resort. I would thoroughly investigate everything on offer as soon as you arrive and book things in. Heaven help you if you care about good healthy food.

Room Tip: Be careful of 'ocean view', could still mean you also back onto a road eg. in the Ali'i tower.

Great experience with the expected quality delivered by Hilton. This is a VERY large resort, so "check in" can be a wait if you hit it at peak times. We checked out early in the morning, but still had the use of our room til 11am. Then we played on the beach, and used a "hospitality room" for a shower when it was time to leave later in the day.

A beautiful hotel, great service very friendly staff, easy to get transport to & from the hotel, taxis & tranfers on site good choice of restaurants, walking distance from alla moana shopping center, while there are a lot of people staying here it's hardly noticeable we only found it too busy on Friday night when they have an outdoor show & then free fireworks, all in all a great holiday destination

This is a wonderful place that just didn't know when to stop. The room were nice. The grounds were beautiful. Just way too large, and far too many guests. My wife and I were checked into the Tapa tower which is in the middle of the complex and over 2 football field lengths from the shuttle drop off point or the front desk which are on opposite ends. Waikiki beach was beautiful, although it has a hard man-made feel to the sand. This is a great place for families with teens. Lots of activities. Not the best for couples. My wife loved the spa. I highly recommend Goofy cafe right outside the complex. They have fresh local foods at a reasonable price.

Room Tip: If you choose to stay here use v-check-in. The hotel doesn't mention much about it, but look it up on the website. It requires 72 hours advance notice, but you can avoid the extremely long check-in line.
