We bid on priceline and had the bid accepted at $79 a night. Wonderful hotel for this price! Very clean and pretty rooms; hotel in convenient walking distance to everything in downtown Honolulu. Staff very friendly--lobby welcoming. Bathroom small but that was okay. The cleanliness and pretty rooms made up for it. The only problems were....in our room the shower water was only lukewarm, but our friends on another floor did not have this problem. Also, we had very slow wifi access, but again, our friends had no problem. I guess the answer is stay on the 12th floor not the 10th! That's a mystery--maybe check with the front desk to find out if there's a problem in that area. Also, the key system was funky...you need a key to operate the elevator, and it takes 2 or 3 tries to make it work. Same thing with key card in our room....didn't work first time. But we were never locked out or stuck in elevator. One wonderful thing was every morning we ate breakfast at Keoni's next door--opens at 7 am. for breakfast even though breakfast isn't listed on outside menu board. It was so nice! Our table was part inside--part on the porch--the waitress kept our coffee filled all the time.

I stayed a week at this hotel and it was one of the most miserable experiences I've had in a very long time. First, the nice things about the hotel - the location was incredible for the price. You are situated less than a block from the beach and the city view rooms have some very nice partial beach-front views. The hotel is also located a block from the main shopping strip and there are several good restaurants within walking distance. At the floor of the hotel is a good pizza joint with great happy-hour deals ($5 pizza, wings, nachos, $3 beers). There is a parking lot across the street with very reasonable parking rates and a lot of other things to do and see within close proximity.

The problem with the hotel, however, is the unbelievably rude reception desk. We were greeted by an extremely rude front reception clerk. I don't know what caused her to be so upset, but she treated us like she was doing us a favor by checking us in. Very little talk, no smile, no thank you, just "Gimme your ID" and then handed me the keys. After an 8 hour flight, I was less than impressed. She insisted that I provide her with photo ID for my spouse too, which is something I've never been asked to do.

Over the week, a couple of things we had went missing. Some clothing and accessories we had simply went missing after the staff "cleaned" the room (and by clean, I mean fix the beds and stock the soap). We called the service desk, infuriated, and they simply offered to send over a security guard to take a report. Clearly nothing came out of our complaint as we were not even transferred to a manager, nor did anyone call us to inquire further about our missing items.

The room itself was tired and run down. A tube style television sat in a dated cabinet, while the furniture was older and nothing to write home about. This is the norm for 3* hotels in Hawaii, as most that I've seen look tired and beat up. Certainly, I'd not be so forgiving if this was in another area of the country. The A/C unit couldn't keep up with the heat, so the room was always warm and musty, especially at night when it made sleeping difficult.

Overall, this was one of the least relaxing hotels I've ever stayed in. I had to make use of the safe and hide our valuables in the car because they were safer there. The front staff lady (Samoan looking lady, larger build) was awful to deal with and I certainly won't be staying here ever again. Other hotels are similarly priced and offer much better experiences, so don't spend your hard earned money where it isn't appreciated.

Booked a double kitchenette room for 6 nights. I stayed on Penthouse level which had a lovely view of the beach and city combined. The bathroom is tiny (as described by many other trip advisors here), but as a solo traveller it satisfied my requirements. Water pressure in the bathroom was fierce!

**Positives**
- free pink line trolley to / from Ala Moana shopping centre; wifi access in the lobby area; the kitchenette with microwave / fridge / stove top; comfortable bed & spacious room layout.

**Negative**
- room maintenance, eg. sliding door to balcony wouldn't open all the way; & mould on bathroom tiles & surrounds.

Disappointed to find out the Fitness centre is closed however was offered the option of gym access at the sister property Ohana West Hotel. Floors 2 - 8 are undergoing balcony maintenance so there are notices everywhere stating that there guests will experience construction noise between the hours of 9am to 5pm. Breakfast consists of a drink (juice / water / tea / coffee) and a snack (muffin / danish pastry / toast). Pay $1.50 to upgrade to a cappuccino / latte. There's also a coin operated laundry on Kuhio - very fast wash 20 minutes and the load is done!

Overall this is a well located property with the added advantage of free wifi, breakfast, & pink line trolley. If you are looking for luxury, stay at the Westin Moana Surfrider.

The location and value of this Ohana East hotel are excellent. Friendly staff and clean rooms were also appreciated. However, there were too many mistakes with our rooms and hotel door locking mechanisms for us to recommend this hotel. This was a family trip for us, we had a total of 3 rooms and each room had problems that included luggage mixups, key cards not working and door locking mechanisms that would randomly unlock. Huge inconvenience and huge security risks because we were constantly worried about the door locks and whether our belongings were safe.

I have stayed in hundreds of hotels all around the world, Is Ohana east the best, of course its not, but then its not priced as such. Is it pretty good and far better than some of the reviews on here suggest - Absolutely.

Firstly and foremost and for me this is the most important factor, the location is excellent - apart from beachfront (which you pay for) its location is fantastic for the price. Its close to practically everything, a very short walk to the beach, close to the main street and restaurants and central Waikiki's only supermarket. Really cant reiterate this enough, if you want to be part of the action, this is the area to stay in, doesnt have to be this hotel, but somewhere around here is the place to go.

The hotel itself, is actually pretty nice, the lobby is up one level of the ground and nice enough, its nothing to write home about , but its also fine to sit around in, it has a number of soft chairs to do so while using the free wireless internet. It also wasnt especially busy at any point which made it pretty quiet.

The pool area is also up here, on first look the pool doesnt capture your imagination but have to say did use it a number of times, its actually quite cold water which is very refreshing, if thats not your thing it has an attached hot tub which is a nice thing to sit in at night.

The rooms themselves I was pleasantly surprised, I have seen various descriptions of the furniture in these reviews such as old fashioned, or retro - i guess so, dont confuse this with worn out and shoddy thou, as a style perhaps not what you would pick today (white cane furniture) but all the stuff in our room was in good condition and perfectly acceptable. The room had enough drawers etc and 2 large wardrobes, one was large enough to fit in our babies travel cot - so with its sliding door, she got her own room and we got to have the tv and lights on - bonus.

Bathrooms always seem to be a point of contention, i guess its small, but its not that small, it was functional enough, the shower was a strange shape i guess but it had good water supply and was hot, the rest was perfectly usable. Perhaps not 2 at a time, but still not bad and nothing not to try to avoid.

Service wise, overall pretty good. One thing which was the only let down is one night, someone on our floor decided to host a full on party in their room with god knows how many guests but at least 10 or more, this spilled out to the hallway and there was an epic amount of noise and ruction going on, sadly this started at 10pm and went through to 3am, despite calls to reception, they seemingly couldnt/wouldnt do anything about it, sure they would send security up and then 10mins later it would be back on, the guests simply didnt care - this is when a more service orientated hotel would have kicked them out (i have seen this happen) but in the end it was more the hotel gave up trying and eventually the party drunk themselves quiet. When i spoke to the nice lady at reception the next day about this she was apologetic but also said there is not much we can do, thats what you get in Waikiki - which i disagree with. - Bit of a shame. It did only happen one night, but that was a shame and prevents it from being a 5/5 stay.

Other than that, the service at reception etc was pretty friendly and useful.

A couple of other points worth mentioning, Ohana does give you a number of extras which on the surface dont appear like much but are actually very useful, there is actually a list of them but 2 that we used was , free phone calls locally and to the US , thats handy when arranging things and the other was your room card is basically an unlimited ride care on the Pink line trolleys that go throughout Waikiki and down to the Ala Moana shopping centre. This is very useful, we used it shamelessly - at least 15 times , probably more. So 15 x 2 people x $2 per trip actually adds up to a useful saving.

The only other thing is parking, its easy to access and close to the lobby, but reasonably expensive at $18 a day - casual parking is $30 a day in the same building so guests do save and for Waikiki is standard but it does hurt a little after 7 days.

So all in all, I would stay here again, when next in Waikiki. its a really good place to stay, its not Trump , but is not priced as such, in fact for our 10 nights we got an exceptional deal, its a shame they couldnt keep the noise down that one night, but the little add ons and location more than make up for it. Some of the older TA reviews say some pretty negative stuff, and I read them like you do and got a little worried, but in this case there really was nothing to worry about.

This is a great hotel. Quick and easy check-in. My room was very spacious and clean. After reading some of the other posts I was a little concerned that it might be noisy but I have not noticed any problems. Friendly and helpful staff. Close to the beach, 5 min walk, good sports bar with great mon - fri specials on pizza and finger food. Would recommend to other solo travellers and families.
