“Only place I'd stay in Waikiki”
Reviewed 24 June 2010

We spent 4 days in Waikiki before hopping over to Maui and stayed at the Outrigger Reef on a friend's recommendation. This hotel was so comfortable, we didn't want to leave.

I recommend an oceanfront view as the neighboring hotels/condos are tall and won't leave much to look at. Our balcony wrapped around the corner. We were on the 3rd floor, but heard nothing at night either on the beach or in the hallway. It was as quiet as the grave.

Kani Ka Pila Grille is on-site by the pool (as if you needed one with the ocean right there) and the food was terrific - breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals are about $15 -$20. The hotel staff were super helpful.

Serenity Spa on-site gave a nice couple's massage, but it was twice what we could have paid in Maui. I'd shop around more.

The Fitness Center in the basement is bare bones, but ample if there aren't more than 6 people using it at one time. Free weights, bikes, treadmills and elliptical machines are available.

The Business Center also in the basement lets you print airline tickets for free. That was really nice.

Have the bell desk call you a shuttle to go to the major tourist sites ($13 round trip per person) and the airport ($10 round trip per person) - it's kills the cost of a taxi ($46). We found we didn't need a car rental since we weren't staying long or exploring all of Oahu. The shuttle met all our transportation needs. Just don't forget to bring cash to tip. Note that those with car rentals will pay an extra $25 a night for parking at the hotel (you won't find parking on the streets).

My only complaint was a slow internet connection. It was tolerable, but not the hi-speed we're used to on the mainland or on Maui. Everything else was plush, upscale and beautiful.

This place has large rooms for the type rooms they are. You only have a sink and a refer for a kitchen area so you really can't prepare any food in your room. The beach is OK, very rocky when you get in the water. You really have to walk down the beach toward Diamond Head to get to the better beach area where you can really enjoy the ocean.

This was our first trip to Hawaii, which was a celebration of a milestone anniversary. We were island hopping, this was our first stop. Our travel agent heard about the $110 million renovation at the Outrigger Reef on rhe Beach and suggested we stay here. This hotel exceeded all of our expectations in every way. The property was absolutely gorgeous, inside and out. And while it was a large hotel, it never felt overwhelmingly large to us. Service was excellent at all levels. When we checked in, we were told they had upgraded us to an ocean front room in the Ocean Tower. It turned out to be an amazing corner room, 2 decks with views of the ocean and Diamond Head. This hotel is truly "ocean front" - the guest rooms are directly above the beach. We had the daily breakfast buffet in the Shore Bird (included in our package), and also had lunch and dinner in the Shore Bird and Ocean House restaurants - all meals were excellent. The Shore Bird was also fun in the evening with music and karaoke. The beach was lovely and surprisingly uncrowded, totally unexpected. We were in awe of the view of Diamond Head and the beautiful ocean water. A short walk to a prime tourist area with the obligatory stores and crowds, if that's what you are looking for, but we never felt its presence while we were in the hotel or on the beach. Easy transfers to bus tours and other events (we did the Star of Honolulu dinner cruise one night). This hotel also offers free internet and free long distance to the mainland US. If you are looking for a beautiful resort hotel that is close to the action but still offers the option to enjoy the beauty of Waikkii beach without the crowds, this is the place to be. This would absolutely be our first choice is we are ever fortunate enough to return here in the future. We miss it already!

Travelling with friends, we thought we had all booked (via Expedia) into the Outrigger Reef. On arrival at 9am, we realised that one booking had been made for another Outrigger Hotel. The reception staff were wonderful. Gina phoned the other Outrigger to confirm transfer, then phoned Expedia and followed them up for over one hour to receive the necessary transfer paperwork. She then located our room so we could shower and change after the long flight from Sydney. For such a large hotel, the staff were warm and friendly at all times. Our friends had recommended the hotel following a previous stay, and we'll definitely return. Thank you Gina and team!

This was our first stop on our two week adventure around Hawiian Islands and we loved the hotel. Great location on beach and walking distance to all shops/restaurants in area.
Would highly recommend this hotel!
