“Busy, but lovely. ”
Reviewed 7 February 2014 via mobile

We stayed at the moana surfrider for five nights at the end of a 46 day holiday in the US. Honolulu was a welcome respite from the freezing temperatures in Chicago, Boston and New York (thank you, polar vortex), and an opportunity for us to acclimatize prior to returning to stinking hot Perth. We were also celebrating our eldest daughter's 21st birthday while in Honolulu, so we wanted it to be a bit special for her. Many thanks to our fabulous travel agent who changed our booking to this hotel at the last minute, because she felt our original choice, while nice, was nowhere near as special as the Moana Surfrider - she was so right. We stayed in the old part of the hotel, which is a gracious old lady, and so charming. The rooms were small, but very comfortable, and we were on one of the wings, so we got some street noise, but not enough to bother us. We also could hear the music from the Banyan tree courtyard, but again, not enough to bother us. This hotel is overrun with weddings - so cute, all Japanese, and they actually added to the ambience for us, as they gave us many opportunities to comment on gowns, suits etc. We only ate breakfast here, so can't really comment on the food, but breakfast was fine. We ordered a la carte, so can't comment on the buffet. Service is charming. On the day of my daughter's birthday, I had alerted the staff at the restaurant, and they made a lovely fuss of her, giving her a lei and a little packet of tea for a gift. Not bad with only 15 minutes notice. The location is excellent, we had fun on the beach - we didn't bother with booking chairs, just put our towels on the sand, perfect. It was a lovely, relaxing way to end our trip. Plus, the return flight to Perth via Sydney was timed perfectly for us to avoid any jetlag. Thoroughly recommended.

I choose the beach house restaurant at the moana as it should be one of the best in honolulu. The evening started with a table next to the kitchen entrance despite a specific reservation request several hours prior for a balcony table. This was however well recovered after a pleasant 15 minute wait in the lobby bar while being entertained by a delightful pianist who not only communicated with the guests but also took great pride in his performance. the hotel atmosphere is exceptional reminiscent of a peninsula in hongkong or the raffles in singapore. The menu stvthe beach house is very good but highly focused on the typical American fare of steak but complimented by a descent wine list of mostly American wines. Service was pleasant and as usual a bit too casual for my taste. The waiter although knowledgable in the daily special lacked the finer art of service which I would expect from this restaurant: cutlery replaced by being dropped from a cm above the table whereas it should be gently and firmly placed on the table well aligned with existing cutlery and table mat. Wine is poured or rather pushed into the glasses without asking if a refill or top up is appropriate at the moment, pasta served with only a fork... No spoon or other utensil, the complimentary dip and crackers which was very good should have been served at the beginning of the meal as an amuse Bouche and not deliversed at the end of the main Course by the bus boy, appetizer plates had to be requested to be replaced for fresh ones so other items could be eaten, and unfortunately the check which was at this point topped up with a generous tip,as i had forgiven the lack of formalized training, took far too long to be returned and was in fact neglected as was a final departing thank you, farewell and enquiry as to how the meal / evening had been. This unfortunately really was not acceptable. Hence poor tip and this review. Comments on the food as the waiter was apparently not interested in the feedback : lump crab cakes consistency was good however the usually sweet crab meat had been thoroughly overruled by a heavy hand of salt. The sauces of thousand island and wasabi were disappointingly of poor imagination and culinary know how as was the overall presentation which any novice kitchen commission could pull off, the oysters were ok but lacking in flavor and flesh and where were they from ??? Fish of the day was excellent as was the mixed seafood stew. The asparagus were flavorful but overcooked and disgustingly dripping in grease on the plate. And why serve asparagus on a round plate ? I do want to end on a positive note and mention that the spaghetti bolonaise was however the best i have ever tasted in 26 years of being in the hospitality industry. not too heavy, fresh meat and beautiful tomatoe flavors, not greasy and pasta cooked just right. It was brought out quickly and efficiently for my daughter to start on first before our own appetizers as requested. .... If only the rest had continued as well it would have been great !

Aloha,
Thank you for your review. It is unfortunate that we were unable to exceed your expectations on your recent visit to the beachhouse at the moana restaurant. Your honest feedback is appreciated and will be shared with our food and beverage management team. On a brighter note, we are glad to hear that you enjoyed the performance at bin1901, the piano bar near the grand staircase in the Moana’s historic wing. bin1901 features live piano entertainment nightly from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm, offering the perfect start or finish to a memorable evening. We hope to have the opportunity to regain your confidence and welcome you back to beachhouse at the moana, our signature restaurant at the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa.

The best place to stay in Waikiki for us. A beautiful relaxed feel, clean rooms, soft beds, free wifi the best 24 hour gym-it overlooks the strip so great people watching!! Right in the middle of everything, so a bit noisy but fun, close to the best shops, we walk to Ala Moana, love the restaurants that are all so close and love the cultural, holiday atmosphere that happens as soon as you walk in.We always choose to stay here!! Loove it!!
Would love the team/staff to be a bit less, "perfunctory" and more "Holiday focused/relaxed" it is a very busy hotel so they have lots to do but we have stayed at busy hotels where we have still felt special, important and welcome-especailly when you stay for 5-7 days.

Room Tip: Beach side is quieter and the view is great, road side is action packed and fun!!

We stayed at the Moana Surfrider in the Ocean tower. Excellent views from the lanai with the most relaxing sounds of waves in the morning.

A very clean hotel with plenty of space. Parking across the street at the Sheraton wasn't so bad.

We loved to sit out in the back on the sun chairs in the evening and listen to the entertainment from the Banyon tree lounge while enjoying the ocean rhythms. \

Definitely will be going back.

P.S. Next door is Duke's.....and they have an awesome breakfast buffet!

This hotel is definitely the most majestic and best located in Waikiki. We experienced great service. Rooms were clean and had everything you needed. Restaurant, pool and beach are great. It's probably overpriced but so is everything in Waikiki. Free wifi in rooms. No breakfast provided. Would definitely stay here again.

I loved this gorgeous historic hotel but it's way overpriced and the service is lacking. I feel you could enjoy this historic building without booking a room. The historical tour held there is free even for non guests, I would recommend it.
We had a really hard time checking in. We came back three times during the day and our room still wasn't available and then when they finally did check us in they told us that they had sold our room and instead of the king size bed that we booked, we were now stuck with doubles.
As a result of the check in delay I barely had enough time to get ready for the wedding we were attending there. It was a stressful experience and we barely got to enjoy our room.
My thoughts: check out the tour and go for lunch but there is not much added value by booking a room
